Korean Broadcaster Kim Gura Offers Advice to Players Amidst WBC Drama
On this day, Korea, led by starting pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin, who returned to the WBC after 17 years, faced a challenging match against Taiwan. In the second inning, Ryu allowed a solo home run to Taiwan's lead-off hitter Chang Yu, giving Taiwan the first score, and recorded one run in three innings. Korea tied the game with an additional run in the bottom of the fifth, but in the top of the sixth, Taiwan's Cheng Tsung-che hit another solo home run, putting Taiwan ahead 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Korea's Kim Do-young hit a two-run home run, giving Korea a 3-2 lead. However, in the bottom of the eighth, Taiwan's Fairchild hit the third home run of the game, allowing Taiwan to regain a 4-3 lead. As Korea struggled to seize the momentum, commentators Park Yong-taek and Lee Dae-hyung noted, "There are still two more offensive opportunities," holding their breath.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kim Hye-seong successfully got on base with a walk, and Kim Do-young hit a crucial game-tying RBI, making the score 4-4. Commentator Park Yong-taek cheered, "It was a really tough pitch in a difficult count, but he didn't lose out on power." As the game went into extra innings, the commentators watched the nail-biting situation unfold. However, the game ended in a 4-5 loss as Taiwan scored the winning run with a successful bunt.
Immediately after the game, on KBS Sports' YouTube content 'Baroduitdam,' caster Lee Dong-geun stated, "Everyone is under the same conditions, but we must accept reality and aim for a win with minimal runs against Australia." Commentator Park Yong-taek, struggling to find words due to disappointment, said, "It's a very difficult situation. We need to calculate precisely, but it seems we need a game with less than two runs allowed and more than seven runs scored." He added, "It's really disappointing, but the players must forget it. That's the best way to perform tomorrow." Commentator Lee Dae-hyung also encouraged, "That's right. Forget and work hard again, and the possibilities are still open."
The world's most prestigious baseball international tournament, the 2026 WBC, featuring KBS commentators Park Yong-taek, Lee Dae-hyung, and caster Lee Dong-geun, will continue until March 18. The game against Australia will be broadcast live on KBS 2TV at 7 PM on the 9th.
