BLACKPINK's Jisoo Faces New Acting Challenge with Netflix's 'Monthly Boyfriend'

BLACKPINK member and actress Jisoo is set to take on a new challenge with the upcoming Netflix series 'Monthly Boyfriend,' premiering next month. With ongoing debates about her acting skills since her debut, all eyes are on whether this project will mark a turning point in her career.

Jisoo's acting abilities first came under scrutiny during the 2021 JTBC drama 'Snowdrop.' Critics pointed out her lack of character interpretation, limited emotional expression, and unclear pronunciation. Despite sharing the lead role with actor Jung Hae-in, many felt she struggled to overcome the limitations often associated with idols-turned-actors.

Her second lead role in Coupang Play's 'Newtopia' did little to change the narrative. Issues with her vocal delivery and intonation persisted, and she faced criticism for her facial expressions and emotional depth. Some even compared her acting tone and delivery to that of Ji Ye-eun from 'SNL Korea,' highlighting her weaknesses, especially when contrasted with co-star Park Jung-min's nuanced performance.

Amidst six years of accumulated criticism, 'Monthly Boyfriend' is seen as a pivotal project for Jisoo's career. The romantic comedy follows a webtoon PD, exhausted by reality, who experiences love through a virtual dating simulation. Jisoo plays the role of Seo Mi-rae, a webtoon PD dreaming of romance in virtual reality.

This project diverges from the genre and period dramas she has previously tackled, offering Jisoo a fresh opportunity. The light-hearted nature and bright tone of romantic comedies could play to her strengths. However, as the genre relies heavily on natural and fundamental acting skills, it could also present new challenges.

Public expectations are higher than ever, given the prolonged discussions surrounding her acting. Whether 'Monthly Boyfriend' will allow Jisoo to shed the long-standing label of acting controversy or lead to a new turning point will be revealed in just over a month.
