Exy of WJSN: A Multifaceted Talent in Music and Acting
Exy, also known as Choo So-jung, is showcasing her remarkable influence not only as the leader of WJSN and an actress but also as a producer.
Debuting in February 2016 as the leader and main rapper of WJSN, Choo So-jung has been making waves in the entertainment industry. She first caught attention with her bold spirit on 'Unpretty Rapstar 2' before her official debut. Last month, she sat down for an interview at the Ten Asia office in Seoul.
Under Exy's leadership, WJSN proved their mettle by winning 'Queendom 2' in 2022. While she has been active in various fields under the name Exy, she is now focusing on acting under her real name, Choo So-jung. She made a notable cameo in 'Marry YOU' last year and is currently filming 'Divorce Insurance' while awaiting the release of the drama 'Heo Sikdang' and the movie 'Eighteen Youth'. Choo So-jung has demonstrated her exceptional talent in idol music production, contributing to several WJSN tracks and co-writing 'Pimple' for ILY:1 in October last year. She fondly recalls working on IVE's 'HEYA', released in April last year, as a memorable project. "I put a lot of thought into creating a rich story based on the sun and moon. It was meaningful to capture IVE's unique color, and the positive response made it even more special," she shared. "I didn't expect it to become a title track, so the unexpected result was even more delightful," she added with a smile.
When asked about the behind-the-scenes of working with various artists, Choo So-jung explained, "Producing requires going through auditions. Many producers receive assignments and work on them. Even for in-house artists, selections are made through blind auditions." She noted, "The competition is fierce. It's a tough process, and just like being cast in a project, you need to be chosen to have your name in the credits. Seeing your name there brings immense satisfaction." She also mentioned her junior group CRAVITY, saying, "Producing 'My Turn' and 'Bad Habits' was significant as they were the first songs I worked on. They marked a meaningful start." She further explained that THE BOYZ's 'PRISM' was selected after intense competition.
Choo So-jung reflected on her experience, "Producing for male idols was more accessible. Having done a lot of hip-hop while rapping, it was more fun than challenging. It reminded me of my time on 'Unpretty Rapstar 2'," she reminisced. Entering her 30s, Choo So-jung confessed that her attitude towards life has changed significantly. "In the past, I focused on results, but now the process is much more important. I value input over output," she stated.
She continued, "Whether completing an album as a singer or bringing a character to life as an actress, I've gained valuable insights from the process. I've realized how precious it is to take on roles, big or small, and create with others. It made me feel alive. While the results and achievements are significant, what stays with me the most over time is the process."
When asked about her goals for the new year, Choo So-jung said, "Rather than setting big goals, I'm focusing on maintaining my physical and mental health and doing my best with what's currently given to me." She added, "Ambitious plans can easily change or lead to disappointment if they don't meet expectations. So, I'm concentrating on diligently preserving what I love each day." She concluded with a smile, "I'm looking forward to 2025 when the projects I completed last year will be released."
