Jo Jung-suk Returns with Summer Comedy 'Zombie Daughter'

Jo Jung-suk, known for his summer comedy hits, is set to return with another comedic venture this summer. His new film 'Zombie Daughter' is slated for release next month, promising another round of his signature humor.

'Zombie Daughter' is a comedic drama about a doting father who undergoes secret training to protect his daughter, the last remaining zombie on Earth. The film is scheduled to premiere on July 30. Expectations are high for 'Zombie Daughter' as Jo Jung-suk has previously achieved box office success with his summer comedies 'Exit' (2019) and 'Pilot' (2024).

'Exit' tells the story of Yong-nam (played by Jo Jung-suk), an unemployed young man, and his college club junior Eui-joo (played by Im Yoon-ah), as they escape a city covered in mysterious toxic gas. Released in July 2019, 'Exit' attracted 9.42 million viewers, ranking sixth in the annual box office that year. It was a remarkable achievement during a year when five films surpassed 10 million viewers, including 'Extreme Job', 'Avengers: Endgame', 'Frozen 2', 'Aladdin', and 'Parasite'. Jo Jung-suk's portrayal of a relatable character resonated with audiences, offering both humor and empathy.

In 'Pilot', Jo Jung-suk plays Jung-woo, a star pilot who becomes unemployed overnight and ends up on a blacklist. He disguises himself as his sister to successfully re-enter the workforce. Jo Jung-suk lost 7kg for his cross-dressing role, trying on over 100 outfits during costume tests, spending 5-6 hours a day. His transformation included skirts, high heels, and long wigs, showcasing his dedication to the role.

In an interview, Jo Jung-suk shared, "Cross-dressing could have been burdensome, but I found it fun when I imagined myself in the role. I wasn't worried about it." He humorously added, "There was quite a reaction, especially since there was a scene where I was hit on, so I had to look pretty. My wife also said I looked pretty," showcasing his comedic flair. His performance in 'Pilot' earned him the Best Actor award at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards.

Jo Jung-suk aims to continue his summer comedy success with 'Zombie Daughter'. In the film, he plays Jeong-hwan, a devoted father who hides in a seaside village to protect his daughter Soo-ah (played by Choi Yoo-ri), the last zombie. He educates her to live naturally in society, with humorous episodes expected to entertain audiences. The released stills show Jo Jung-suk's character trying to control his zombie daughter, sparking curiosity and laughter.

Jo Jung-suk has consistently brought laughter to audiences weary from the summer heat with his comedic talents. This summer, all eyes are on whether he will once again deliver the 'essence of summer comedy'.
