Director Yeon Sang-ho Introduces Evolutionary Zombies in New Film 'The Hive'
Known for pioneering the Korean zombie genre with 'Train to Busan' and its sequel 'Peninsula', as well as exploring societal chaos and conflict in series like 'Hellbound' and 'The Face', Yeon has built a unique universe known as the 'Yeoniverse'. His latest project, 'The Hive', promises to elevate audience expectations. The film is set in a quarantined building where isolated survivors face off against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways.
Yeon Sang-ho is renowned for blending genre entertainment with contemporary messages, and 'The Hive' is no exception. He aims to pose significant questions to modern society. "With the rapid communication through the internet and social media, I felt that opinions tend to move collectively. As society becomes more advanced, it seems to be shifting towards a state of collective intelligence rather than individual entities. Through 'The Hive', I wanted to explore human individuality or cooperation against life forms driven by collective intelligence," Yeon explained, capturing the essence of a rapidly communicating and collectivized society.
Yeon also shared that despite his extensive experience, filming 'The Hive' was a novel experience. "When working with creatures, it's usually CGI, so you film with nothing there. But with 'The Hive', I could see the zombies right in front of me, which added a sense of realism," he remarked, expressing his unique experience on set.
'The Hive' is set to hit theaters on May 21, 2026.
