‘Nam June Paik: The Moon is the Oldest TV’ is a film that records the time of Nam June Paik, the first digital creator of the 20th century. Nam June Paik, the father of video art who was born in Seoul in 1932 and passed away in Miami in 2006, will finally be presented in 2023, 17 years after his death. Korean-American director Amanda Kim created this film after extensive research and arduous persuasion on unresolved copyright issues.
After spending a whopping five years from preparation to production, we were able to secure a vast amount of Nam June Paik archives, footage, and interviews with global artists. Actor Steven Yeun of 'Minari' and 'Angry Men' participated as an executive producer and narrator who read Nam June Paik's writings directly.
In addition to being selected as the best film of the year by the Guardian in 2023, it was invited to the competition section of the Sundance Film Festival, invited to the competition section of the Tel Aviv International Documentary Film Festival, invited to the special premiere section of the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, screened at the MoMA Doc Fortnight opening night, and introduced through the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival.
Director Amanda Kim said, "It was a labor of love and exploration of the enigmatic Nam June Paik. Nam June Paik served as inspiration and strength throughout the difficult work. Nam June Paik cannot be defined simply as a video artist. He always read patterns and showed us where we can go. “I knew where it was headed. I hope you can discover the various aspects of Nam June Paik, who foresaw the future.”
The launching poster draws attention with Nam June Paik's sensuous design. The launching trailer shows Nam June Paik's artistic aspects and arouses nostalgia in those who loved Nam June Paik and curiosity in those who want to know about Nam June Paik.
