Below is a Q&A with Director Kang Hyung-seon.Q. How does it feel to reach 800 episodes as the first variety show in Korea to do so? How did the members react?
Director Kang: I first joined 'Running Man' as an assistant director in 2016 and spent about three and a half years with the show. Returning in 2026 to celebrate the 800th episode still feels surreal. The members, who have been running tirelessly for 16 years, are truly remarkable and admirable. On the day of the 800th episode shoot, the members were as lively and playful as ever, just like on any other day. I believe this consistency is the driving force behind the show's longevity.

Q. Ji Suk-jin, one of the fixed members, recently turned 60, marking a first in variety shows. How was the atmosphere during the celebratory race?
Director Kang: Over the 16 years, members who were in their 30s are now in their 40s, and those in their 40s are now in their 50s. Ji Suk-jin, the eldest, has reached the start of his 60s. The members felt a special sentiment during this shoot. Despite the physical demands of outdoor variety shows, Ji Suk-jin has persevered to bring healthy laughter to viewers. We prepared a special 'Ji's 60th Birthday Party' race to commemorate this milestone. Ji Suk-jin expressed his gratitude, and fans also enjoyed it, making it a memorable episode.

Q. There was a recent dating rumor involving Ji Ye-eun. Did the production team and members know beforehand, and how did Ji Ye-eun react?
Director Kang: The production team was unaware until the morning of the 800th episode shoot. Ji Ye-eun, experiencing this for the first time, handled it with humor and energy, which I appreciated as a director.

Q. How does the production team come up with the creative races that are so well-received?
Director Kang: We often draw inspiration from the works of guest stars or current social issues and trends. We also revisit past episodes for meaningful ideas and engage in discussions with Yoo Jae-suk and the members to develop new concepts.

Q. 'Running Man' continues to rank high in the '2049 ratings.' What do you think is the key to its enduring popularity?
Director Kang: I believe it's the unique characters of each member and their chemistry. From the beginning, each member had distinct charms, and the show's production highlighted these, creating a brand with its own vitality. This has led to a strong fanbase both domestically and internationally, allowing 'Running Man' to maintain its popularity for 16 years.

Q. Having been with 'Running Man' from assistant director to director, what has been the most challenging aspect of working in variety shows?
Director Kang: Weather is a significant challenge. Many scenes and missions are outdoors, and sudden weather changes can disrupt plans. We have to quickly adapt by finding new locations and modifying games. Another challenge is the members' health. As a regular program, it's difficult to take breaks, so everyone is mindful of their health and personal routines to ensure the show's continuity.

Q. There is interest in the 'rental member' system, with mentions of Gong Myung on 'Jim Jong-kook' channel. Is there a possibility of new rental members joining?
Director Kang: We are always open to the possibility of new rental members. We keep a list of guests who had good chemistry with the members and plan to invite more guests to find the right fit.

Q. Are there any guests you would like to invite to 'Running Man' in the future?
Director Kang: I would love to invite BTS's V, who has expressed affection for 'Running Man,' Dex, who mentioned wanting to greet Yoo Jae-suk every morning, and aespa's Karina, who has been frequently mentioned by the members but has never appeared on the show.

Q. Any message for the viewers who have supported 'Running Man'?
Director Kang: I am truly grateful to the viewers who have supported 'Running Man' for 16 years. Thanks to you, we hold the title of Korea's longest-running variety show. We will continue to work hard to repay your love and support, aiming to keep the show running for another 10 or 20 years. Please continue to watch us with warmth.
