Renowned writer Im Sung-han, also known as Phoebe, returns to the small screen after three years with her new drama 'Dr. Shin'. Following the controversial 'Lady Durian', which featured a shocking storyline of same-sex relationships between in-laws, her latest work is already stirring anticipation and concern.

Im Sung-han has carved a unique niche in Korean drama with her 'bizarre' settings that are rarely seen. Her focus on shock and sensationalism over narrative coherence has consistently left audiences in awe. In 'Heaven's Fate', a character dies suddenly while laughing at a comedy show, and in 'New Tales of Gisaeng', a grandmother's ghost possesses a character, granting her laser vision and x-ray abilities.

Despite the criticism, the addictive nature and bold attempts of her dramas are undeniably her strengths. The 'Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)' series achieved a record-breaking 16.6% viewership in its second season, the highest for a TV Chosun drama. Even with genre-defying plots like AI-human fusions and child spirits in adult bodies, Im's unique storytelling drew viewers to their screens.

However, not all of her sensational dramas have been successful. 'Lady Durian' faced backlash for its provocative theme of in-law same-sex relationships, resulting in a drop from a 4.2% viewership in its first episode to 3% in the second, peaking at only 8.1%. This was a disappointing performance compared to the impact of 'Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)'.

Now, 'Dr. Shin' is set to premiere with an equally unconventional premise. The drama features a 'mother-daughter brain swap', where a mother transplants her brain into her daughter's body to save her after an accident. The trailer's line, "Brain swap is possible, right? Me (the mother)", showcases Im's peculiar imagination.

Netizens have reacted with comments like "Just the title drains my energy", "Is this a medical drama or an SF horror?", and "Im's limitation is having settings without narratives". The fatigue from chasing ratings through shock rather than solid storytelling is evident.

Im Sung-han describes 'Dr. Shin' as a drama that explores the devotion of mothers to their children. Regarding the polarized reactions to her sensationalism, she stated, "I believe dramas should have dramatic elements." She also expressed her desire to explore new genres and materials.

Ultimately, the key question is how 'Dr. Shin' will be received by the public. Will Im Sung-han reclaim her reputation by captivating audiences once more, or will she continue down a path of diminishing returns trapped in sensationalism?
