Reporter Kim Se-ah from TenAsia delves deeply into entertainment industry issues.
Dex, who has made a name for himself in the variety show scene, is now expanding his career into acting. He has been cast in the upcoming ENA drama 'Eye Shopping,' set to premiere in July, marking his official foray into serious acting.
Dex first gained recognition in 2020 as an instructor on the YouTube web variety show 'Fake Men 2.' He further built his reputation by appearing in survival and dating shows like 'Bloody Game' and 'Single's Inferno 2.' His charm and wit on MBC's 'Around the World in 80 Days 2' earned him praise from viewers, culminating in winning both the Rookie Award and Best Couple Award at the 2023 MBC Entertainment Awards, proving his popularity and appeal.
Last year, Dex cautiously ventured into acting with his debut in LG Uplus STUDIO X+U's horror mystery 'Tarot: Seven Stories.' Despite the genre's demand for high-level acting skills, he delivered a convincing performance, exceeding expectations.
The upcoming ENA drama 'Eye Shopping' is Dex's first attempt at a traditional drama. The action thriller depicts the survival and revenge of children abandoned by their adoptive parents and left for dead. Dex reunites with Yeom Jung-ah, with whom he previously worked on the variety show 'Sister's Direct Delivery,' now as co-actors.
In the drama, Dex plays Jung Hyun, a human weapon raised by Yeom Jung-ah's character, Kim Se-hee, and the de facto operator of an illegal adoption trafficking organization. As a cold character who follows orders without question, the role requires him to portray complex emotions and drive the plot, presenting a new challenge for him.
Dex also has several cameo roles lined up. He will appear in the 2025 SBS drama 'Kiss for No Reason,' maintaining his friendship with Ahn Eun-jin. Additionally, he is set to make a special appearance in Netflix's original series 'Bloodhounds 2.' These roles, though brief, offer a chance to showcase his ability to portray characters distinct from his variety show persona.
Dex's appeal in the broadcasting industry is not solely due to his acting skills. His genuine personality on variety shows has resonated well with audiences, reducing the casting risk. His screen presence and ability to embody characters make him a safer choice for producers compared to a completely new actor.
In response to comments about his aspirations as an actor, Dex humorously remarked, "I'm just trying my hand at different things because I'm not skilled enough." While it may sound lighthearted, it reflects his willingness to explore his potential in various directions.
Though there are concerns about him venturing into a field outside his primary expertise, there is also anticipation. This challenge could be the first step in proving the potential of 'Actor Kim Jin-young.'
