South Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun is set to make her return to the big screen after 11 years, opting for public engagement over her usual 'mystique'. This move is seen as a strategic attempt to break the cycle of recent box office disappointments.

In anticipation of the May release of director Yeon Sang-ho's film 'The Hive', Jun Ji-hyun plans to appear on YouTube web shows 'Excuse Go' and 'Na Young-seok's Waggle Waggle' alongside actors Koo Kyo-hwan and Ji Chang-wook. A representative from 'The Hive' cautiously stated to TenAsia, "Nothing is confirmed yet; discussions are ongoing." However, the actors are expected to participate barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Last year, Jun Ji-hyun made her web variety show debut on the YouTube channel 'Study King Jin Genius Hong Jin-kyung', marking her first such appearance in 28 years. The video garnered 900,000 views within 13 hours of release, prompting her to expand her promotional efforts this year. Her last TV variety show appearance was in 2000 on MBC's 'Achieve Your Goal Saturday-god's Childcare Diary'. For nearly two decades, she maintained a low profile outside of her acting projects, but has recently shifted to engaging with the public through YouTube.

This change is partly attributed to the underwhelming performance of her recent projects. Starting with Netflix's 'Kingdom: Ashin of the North' in 2021, followed by tvN's 'Jirisan' and Disney+'s 'Polaris', Jun Ji-hyun faced consecutive setbacks.

'Kingdom: Ashin of the North' was criticized for its slow pace and limited screen time for Jun Ji-hyun, failing to meet fan expectations. 'Jirisan', with a production cost of 30 billion won, received negative reviews for awkward CGI and excessive product placement, ending with lower-than-expected ratings.

Similarly, 'Polaris', which had a budget of 70 billion won, struggled to gain traction. Its complex narrative and abrupt romantic developments alienated viewers, while disruptive bed scenes and outdated 'mistress' tropes were seen as detracting from the show's quality. 'The Hive' marks Jun Ji-hyun's return to film since 'Assassination' in 2015.

Jun Ji-hyun is also actively preparing for her next project. Since March, she has been involved in the production of the drama 'Human X Gumiho', set to release next year. She will reunite with Ji Chang-wook, her co-star from 'The Hive', raising anticipation. With back-to-back major projects, the pressure on her as a lead actress is significant.

The rise of YouTube appearances as a new promotional norm in the entertainment industry seems to have influenced Jun Ji-hyun's decision. In the past, top actors often maintained an air of mystery, engaging with the public solely through their work. However, appearances on popular YouTube channels like Yoo Jae-suk's 'Excuse Go' and Na Young-seok's 'Channel Fifteen' have become essential for promoting projects. With fewer TV talk shows, major YouTube channels provide a platform for actors to showcase their natural selves.

Jun Ji-hyun's adaptation to this trend suggests a shift in her communication strategy. As she narrows the gap with the public, there is hope that she will achieve significant box office success, signaling a comeback.
