MBC's 'Welcome, First Time in Korea?' Returns with Exciting Changes and New Host
The revamped format will feature a rotating cast of studio members who match the nationality of the travel protagonist, bringing in experts and relevant guests to provide deeper insights into the traveler's unique experiences. Jeon Min-kyung PD explained the expanded casting approach, stating, "To make travel enjoyable, one must know the country well. When we first started the program in 2017, few foreigners knew much about Korea. Most foreigners familiar with Korea had family or friends here, which naturally led to the 'host' concept."
However, Jeon noted a shift in perception, "Recently, while producing 'Welcome, First Time in Korea?', I heard different responses abroad. Many people expressed their love for Korean dramas, variety shows, and food. This gave us confidence that many people could enjoy traveling in Korea even without friends here. So, we decided to invite those who can truly enjoy Korea."
The first teaser video for the new season surprised viewers by mentioning big names like Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Chris Appelhans, Mark Zuckerberg, and Scarlett Johansson. Jeon Min-kyung PD hinted that some of these names might actually appear on the show, sparking curiosity about the upcoming cast.
The beloved 'host-invited travel' format will continue, offering a mix of 'local vibe' guided tours and 'exploratory' adventures by newcomers to Korea. This blend promises to deliver diverse entertainment in the upcoming season.
The studio lineup will also see changes, with new members joining based on the travel protagonist's nationality. Jeon Min-kyung PD explained, "We want to delve deeply into the characteristics of each country in the studio. French and Canadian travels will undoubtedly differ, so we'll invite those familiar with the protagonist's country to explore its culture and traits."
In addition, the show has undergone an MC reshuffle. Alberto and Lee Hyun-yi have stepped down, with DinDin joining as the new host.
Alberto recently faced controversy over comments made about historical issues between Korea and Japan. During a YouTube channel discussion, he mentioned advising his son to consider both sides of history, which sparked backlash. Alberto later apologized on social media, acknowledging his "lack of consideration" and taking full responsibility for his "careless remarks."
