Family Drama Unfolds on MBC's 'Oh Eun-young Report': A Mother and Son's Strained Relationship

A shocking story of misunderstanding and one-sided consideration leading to irreparable damage between a mother and son was revealed.

On the night of the 2nd, MBC's 'Oh Eun-young Report: Marriage Hell' aired a 'Family Hell' special featuring Hwang Sook-ja and her son Kim Byung-ho, exposing the deep rift between them.

During the broadcast, the son recalled harsh disciplinary memories from his childhood, which still cause him to become extremely tense in his mother's presence. He confessed to feeling a fear of death when his mother installed a CCTV in his room or hit him with a recorder, leading to stitches. The mother, in turn, expressed her distress, claiming her son assaulted her while drunk. The revelation of their exchange of messages denying their parent-child relationship shocked the panelists.

The conflict between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was also severe. The son, married to a Vietnamese wife, expressed dissatisfaction with his mother visiting unannounced and interfering in their privacy. The mother claimed she visited daily to help her daughter-in-law adjust to Korean life, but failed to assist during her daughter-in-law's postpartum recovery due to cultural misunderstandings, causing resentment. Additionally, Dr. Oh Eun-young criticized the mother for forcing her daughter-in-law to take unverified natural remedies during pregnancy, sternly warning about the dangers of medication during pregnancy.

There was also a tense standoff over the grandchild's name. The mother insisted on a name she chose based on fortune-telling, but when the son and his wife applied for a name change due to pronunciation difficulties for the foreign wife, the mother felt deeply betrayed. She refused to acknowledge the new name and insisted on calling the grandchild by the name she chose, escalating the conflict. The son regretted not standing up to his mother from the start and was moved to tears.

Dr. Oh Eun-young pointed out that even if the mother's intentions were not bad, her self-centered attitude of feeling wronged when her goodwill is rejected is problematic. She diagnosed that unless the mother changes her behavior of acting solely based on her judgment without coordinating with others, the conflict will persist. Dr. Oh emphasized that the mother must abandon her habit of judging others based solely on her experiences and urged for changes to restore the relationship.
