Shocking Secrets Unveiled in Stepson's Death Case on SBS's 'Unanswered Questions'
The Suspicious Death of a 14-Year-Old Stepson
On January 31, 2025, around 7 PM, a car rushed into a hospital in Iksan, North Jeolla Province. A man in his 40s hurried into the emergency room with a child in his arms, who was already unconscious. Despite over 50 minutes of desperate CPR, the child tragically passed away.
The deceased, a middle school second grader, was only 14 years old and referred to as Kim Somang (alias). Suspicious bruises and wounds were found all over Somang's body, leading to a police report on suspected abuse. The police arrested the man, who was the child's stepfather, having remarried Somang's mother eight years prior.
“My first impression was like seeing 'Mowgli' from 'The Jungle Book,'” said stepfather Oh. He described the brothers, Somang and his sibling, as if they had been raised by animals in the wild. After becoming their legal father, he claimed to have tried to correct Somang's bad habits, admitting to losing his temper and hitting him that day.
The autopsy revealed that Somang died from hypovolemic shock due to severe internal bleeding and organ rupture. The prosecution charged stepfather Oh with child abuse murder, and the first trial sentenced him to 22 years in prison. However, an unexpected twist occurred during the appeal trial.
Reversed Appeal and the Battle for Truth
“I got angry while talking and hit him... I stepped on him to correct his behavior...” said brother Mideum (alias). A recorded conversation between the stepfather and Mideum on the night of the incident was revealed in the appeal court. Mideum initially confessed to stepping on his brother during the first police statement but later recanted, claiming he lied out of concern for their mother. The appeal court identified Mideum as the true perpetrator of Somang's murder.
The stepfather claimed he admitted to the crime in the first trial to protect Mideum. Was it truly out of paternal love? Was Mideum's initial confession true, or was it a false statement of the witnessed situation? 'Unanswered Questions' will pursue the horrifying truth of this abuse-related death case, based on newly revealed evidence.
