Chef Ahn You-seong, known for his appearance on Netflix's 'Black and White Chef,' shared a touching story on the recent episode of EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighboring Millionaire,' aired on the 14th. The episode unveiled the 'seven trials and eight victories' life story of the popular chef, who gained significant attention through the Netflix hit. In 2023, at the age of 51, Ahn was recognized as a master chef, becoming the youngest among 17 Korean culinary masters.

The broadcast also highlighted the 'Ahn You-seong Master Street' in Gwangju, spanning 1,700 pyeong with a land value of approximately 34 billion KRW. Ahn explained his ongoing land acquisitions and expansions, stating, "There are three major culinary schools in the world in France, the USA, and Japan. My ultimate dream is to establish the 'Ahn You-seong Master Culinary School' here, making it the fourth major culinary school globally. We are almost ready."

At the age of 20, Ahn left home with just 10,000 KRW and began his first job at a small sushi restaurant in Seoul. Despite earning a modest salary of 130,000 KRW and sleeping in a corner of the shop, his dedication and perseverance led to rapid growth. Although he was on a successful path as a sous chef in Seoul, he decided to move to Gwangju, against everyone's advice, to find his unique style centered around Namdo cuisine. His pride and philosophy in Namdo cuisine left a strong impression on the public through 'Black and White Chef.' Initially hesitant to participate for three months, he was persuaded by the producers' argument that there was no representative from Honam, eventually competing as the Honam representative and proudly showcasing the flavors of Namdo on stage.

Ahn's restaurant is famously known as the 'President's Sushi House,' frequented by former presidents. He shared a humorous anecdote about being summoned by the bodyguard of former President Kim Dae-jung, who requested two servings of sushi to-go after being impressed by the taste. Additionally, the real-life story behind the famous line "How many grains of rice are there?" from the drama 'Reborn Rich' was revealed, involving Ahn's mentor and the late Chairman Lee Byung-chul. "The chairman, who usually ate eight pieces of sushi per meal, once ate only six, prompting the secretaries to quantify the rice grains, leading to a standard of 320 grains for lunch and 280 for dinner," Ahn recounted. Seo Jang-hoon humorously remarked, "I could eat 50 pieces at that rate," eliciting laughter.

Ahn You-seong is actively promoting the excellence and resilience of Korean cuisine worldwide through various activities, including collaborations with Michelin-starred chefs from France. Furthermore, he demonstrated compassion during the 2024 Jeju Air passenger accident by staying with the victims' families at the scene, offering comfort. Upon hearing the news, he prepared 200 rolls of gimbap and rushed to the site, continuing to provide beef soup to support the bereaved families and recovery personnel.

Ahn reflected, "It was a heart-wrenching scene. A close acquaintance also passed away in the accident, and I felt like everyone there was family, so I stayed for a long time." His 20-year commitment to providing meals for people with disabilities was also highlighted, showcasing his efforts to share his heart with the world through his culinary skills. Seo Jang-hoon expressed admiration, saying, "Watching from the side, it's clear that the master is destined for success. He possesses the most important elements of success: positivity and diligence."

EBS's 'Seo Jang-hoon's Neighboring Millionaire' airs every Wednesday at 9:55 PM.
