Lee Dong-wook Reveals Why He Chose His Latest Role in 'The Good Guy'

On the 14th, a press conference for JTBC's new Friday drama 'The Good Guy' was held at The Link Hotel Seoul in Guro-gu, Seoul. The event was attended by director Song Hae-sung and actors Lee Dong-wook, Lee Sung-kyung, Park Hoon, Oh Na-ra, and Ryu Hye-young.
'The Good Guy' is an emotional noir drama about Park Seok-cheol (played by Lee Dong-wook), the eldest grandson of a family of gangsters who harbors unexpected innocence, and his first love Kang Mi-young (played by Lee Sung-kyung), who dreams of becoming a singer.
Lee Dong-wook takes on the role of Park Seok-cheol, a man who wanted to become a poet but ended up as a gangster to make a living. He explained his choice, saying, "For the past 4 to 5 years, I've been focusing on genre and fantasy works, which left me exhausted. Creating new worlds was challenging. I had to fly on wires and become an uncle that didn't exist in the world," he shared. "I was tired of such worlds, and when I read this script, I wanted to do something grounded and realistic, so I chose it."
Lee Dong-wook has been active in fantasy dramas like 'Goblin' and 'Tale of the Nine Tailed.' Notably, 'Goblin' surpassed a 20% viewership rating.
He added, "I didn't prepare anything special for the role. I did everyday acting. There might be moments where my usual self comes out. I wanted to portray an ordinary character that you might see next to you."
'The Good Guy' will premiere with two consecutive episodes on the 18th at 8:50 PM.
