Kim Shin-rok Shines in 'Your Taste' Amidst Controversy: An Exclusive Q&A

Despite the controversy surrounding Go Min-si's 'school violence allegations', Genie TV's original series 'Your Taste' achieved its highest ratings, concluding with a happy ending. Amidst this, Kim Shin-rok's standout performance has garnered significant attention.
Kim Shin-rok played the role of Jin Myung-sook, a hidden master in the culinary world. Her transformation from her previous role in 'Undercover High School' was highly anticipated. She shed her intense and charismatic image to return more relatable and lovable, captivating audiences with 'Myung-sook's Taste'.
Kim Shin-rok delivered a performance that seemed to embody her character, adding both humor and warmth to the story. Her character's endearing personality and loyalty, especially when it came to the fine dining restaurant she worked at, added a heartwarming touch.
Through 'Your Taste', Kim Shin-rok reaffirmed her acting prowess and successfully redefined herself as an actress. She shared various stories related to 'Your Taste' through her agency, Just Entertainment.

- It's bittersweet to part with the characters and stories I loved. I hope it was a warm and comforting time for everyone who watched.
Q. How did you come to join 'Your Taste'?
- I received the script for the first four episodes through the production company and found it very interesting. Director Park Dan-hee's desire to showcase a lovely side of Kim Shin-rok intrigued me. Originally, the character was set to be in her 50s, but they adjusted it to her 40s for me.
Q. You played contrasting characters in 'Undercover High School' and 'Your Taste', and I heard the filming periods overlapped. Was it challenging, and what were the key points for each character?
- Surprisingly, playing completely opposite characters simultaneously created synergy. It was like a sweet and salty combination, allowing me to switch between the tension of Seo Myung-joo and the vitality of Jin Myung-sook without getting tired or predictable. They provided breathing space for each other.
Q. In 'Undercover High School', your character had a twisted love for her daughter and school. Your performance, including your tone and physical acting, was a topic of discussion. How do you feel about the attention it received?
- Seo Myung-joo had to shake up every scene and situation. It required dynamic strategies, and I tend to focus on actions rather than psychology. I tried to vary my actions, movements, gestures, and posture to convey emotions and thoughts.
Q. In contrast, Myung-sook in 'Your Taste' is lovable and values her relationships. It was refreshing to see you in such a role. What attracted you to Myung-sook?
- Unlike Seo Myung-joo, Jin Myung-sook in 'Your Taste' rarely leads the situation. Her role was more about observing, reacting, and adding nuances, acting as a 'lubricant' rather than directing the flow. The chemistry with fellow actors Kang Ha-neul, Go Min-si, and Yoo Soo-bin was crucial, and I am deeply grateful for their support and energy.
Q. Did you have any subtext in mind for Myung-sook?
- The key point is that every being has desires. I believe that drama arises from the intertwining of these desires, whether they belong to people, objects, animals, or plants. Even if Myung-sook's growth wasn't prominent in the script, I tried to remember that Jin Myung-sook is the most important person in her life.
Q. Myung-sook's fashion was also noteworthy. How did you develop her style with the production team?
- The overall visual ideas came from the director and staff. During costume and makeup tests, I gained inspiration for the character. The curly hair, layered loose-fit outfits, and rounded eyebrows and eyes helped create Myung-sook's lovely energy.
Q. The dynamic with Chun-seung was also a highlight. How was your chemistry with actor Yoo Soo-bin?
- I heard that Myung-sook and Chun-seung's love line was added and removed during script development. Ultimately, we performed without a love line, which I preferred. It allowed us to portray a relationship with affection beyond romantic love. I am grateful to Yoo Soo-bin for being a reliable partner.
Q. Your character's 'fan' side was impressive. Do you have anything you're a fan of?
- I am somewhat of a 'fan' myself. There are so many interesting dramas these days, and I'm looking forward to the upcoming ENA drama 'Salon de Holmes'. The tagline 'Apartment Villain Catching! Problem Solver Quartet' makes me want to watch it immediately.
Q. Do you have a favorite scene or line from 'Your Taste'?
- I loved filming the food truck event in episode 4. We shot it on the lawn in front of Jeonju City Hall for about a week. The weather was great, and it was exciting to film with the cast and crew as we were just getting to know each other. Watching the scene of us working together outdoors was heartwarming.
Q. Any message for the viewers and your future plans?
- I will be performing in a play from late August to early November. I'm looking forward to the time I'll spend in the rehearsal room. I hope to return with new and fearless performances in plays, films, and dramas. Wishing everyone health and happiness.
