‘The Glory’, Shin Ye-eun and Cha Joo-young are disappointed with their next work
The actors who showed impressive acting in the Netflix series 'The Glory' returned to the small screen with their next work. Although the afterimage of the character in 'The Glory' has been erased with an unimaginably 180-degree difference in acting, the less noticeable presence compared to the previous work leaves something to be desired.
Actors Shin Ye-eun and Cha Joo-young are newly discovered actors through 'The Glory'. The two people who played the role of young Park Yeon-jin and adult Lee Hye-jeong, respectively, made a lasting impression on viewers with their creepy villainous roles.
In particular, Shin Ye-eun played the lead role in several works upon her debut, but none of them achieved significant box office success. In the case of KBS2's drama 'Welcome' (2020), he experienced a slump as an actor as it achieved the worst ever rating of 0% for the first time on a terrestrial TV network.
Through 'The Glory', he portrayed "eyes that get darker when he's excited" and made his presence felt even though it was only a short episode. His next work after 'The Glory' is the SBS new Monday-Tuesday drama 'The Love Story of a Flower Scholar'. ‘The Love Story of a Flower Scholar’ is a refreshing, quirky, mystery romance created by four youths, Yoon Dan-oh (played by Shin Ye-eun), the owner of Ewhawon, a boarding house that breaks all stereotypes, and the trio of boarder flower scholars with secrets. This drama is an adaptation of a web novel of the same name, and Shin Ye-eun takes on the title role and returns with a lively energy.
However, compared to expectations, the results were below expectations. 'Love Story of a Flower Scholar', which started with 4.4% in the first episode, started to decline and fell to the 3% range in 3 episodes. Shin Ye-eun is doing a hard carry alone, but a large number of relatively unknown male actors such as Ryeo-woon, Kang Hoon, and Jeong Geon-ju are cast in, so they are unable to attract attention. In Yoon Dan-oh, played by Shin Ye-eun, she succeeded in transforming into a brighter and brighter version of herself that is not found in 'Yeon-jin', but it was not refreshing as it was a look that was often seen in past romantic comedies.
This is also true for Cha Joo-young. Playing the role of stewardess Hye-jeong in 'The Glory', she left a deep impression by showing off her diverse charms, from a creepy smile to a snobbish yet simple-minded appearance. Although he was one of the perpetrators of school violence, he received great praise for his acting skills that could not be hated. At the same time, Cha Joo-young, whose recognition as an actor has rapidly risen, is expected to continue her trend as the lead in the next KBS weekend drama 'The Real Thing Has Appeared'. At the production presentation, attention was focused on Cha Joo-young and his next move.
However, in 'The Reality Appears', where the veil was lifted, Cha Joo-young was unable to show anything more than 'The Glory'. Cha Joo-young was right when she said, “It’s a completely different character from Hye-jeong,” but it was difficult to find an attractive appearance.
It is true that the actors are feeling pressure as 'The Glory' has achieved global box office success. It may not be possible to judge the success of 'The Glory''s next work based solely on its success, but in order for the glory of 'The Glory' not to become a shackle, it seems that more caution will be needed in the selection of future works and characters.
