‘The era of content overflow’. For readers who are wondering what to watch, reporter Tae Yu-na and Ten Asia will serve as an ‘entertainment guide.’ It adds fun to watching the program by delving into hot issues in the entertainment industry, as well as watching points, major characters, and behind-the-scenes stories.
Travel entertainment is pouring in, but I feel a strange sense of déjà vu. Because the familiar format, cast, and background overlap, it feels more familiar than new. Report cards are also polarized.
The 'travel' wind is blowing on the small screen, which was dominated by dating reality shows last year. When the COVID-19 pandemic ended and the travel restrictions were lifted, broadcasters began producing and releasing travel entertainment all at once.
The problem is that there is no special differentiation. Everyone from terrestrial broadcasters to comprehensive channels and cable channels are introducing new travel entertainment, but there are many similarities, such as following the existing format or grouping together close celebrities and sending them overseas. tvN's 'Europe Outside the Tent' and tvN's 'Very Private Southeast Asia' also bring together actors who are not entertainers, show their new charms and relationships, and make people laugh through their struggles overseas. Although the concept and members are different, there are so many similarities that you can't even tell that they are different seasons of the same program.
JTBC's 'United Returns' is a format in which the members who went on a package trip with 'If we unite, we float' go on a backpacking trip for the first time in a long time. The point of laughter is that the members of 'It's Good to Come Together' appear as they are and show off their long-standing chemistry, but the familiar combination that has been seen for so long did not bring freshness.
SBS' 'School Trip Without Math' (hereinafter referred to as 'School Trip') is an ignorant variety show about six men who perform special missions and unique games while traveling. They completed an unfamiliar combination by adding Yang Se-chan and Lee Yong-jin to the 92z combination, but because they focused only on the members' chemistry rather than taking advantage of the charm of travel entertainment, there were not many things to see and could not reveal the charm of travel. KBS's 'Walking Into the Fantasies' (hereinafter referred to as 'Gulhwanjang'), hosted by Park Na-rae, Kyuhyun, and Lee Yu-ri, differentiates itself by being an entertainment show that depicts a family's travels, but each family that appears is a character that has been seen frequently in other entertainment shows, so it is a novelty. There wasn't. From Kim Seung-hyun and his wife from 'Mr. Kim' to Moon Hee-jun and Soyul, the entire family has already been widely consumed through reality shows, so there was nothing special about them.
MBC's 'Born Around the World' (hereinafter referred to as 'Around the World') is a program that has successfully established itself as a terrestrial travel entertainment program. Although the combination of Kian84 and Lee Si-eon is not unique, Kian84's raw travel to feel the local environment, life, and culture in the new setting of South America, which has not been seen often in travel entertainment, caught the eye. Even though it was in the highly competitive Sunday 5th hour, it received a great response, surpassing the highest viewership rating of 5%. Accordingly, unusually, Season 2 and Season 3 were confirmed to be produced one after another.
Travel entertainment is not about simply going abroad. There must be something new to attract viewers. Currently, terrestrial travel entertainment shows are struggling at 1-2%, excluding 'Around the World'. ‘Europe-Spain Outside the Tent’ is also unable to surpass the previous season. This is why I hope that a program like a sweet rain will appear among the mushrooming travel entertainment.
