ENHYPEN's Jay Addresses Fan Conflict Over Member Heeseung's Departure During Birthday Live
Jay's Birthday Live Plea: "Don't Hurt Other Members"
On April 20, Jay hosted a live broadcast on the fan community platform WEVERSE to celebrate his 24th birthday. However, the broadcast was disrupted by fans arguing in the comments about whether "ENHYPEN is 7" or "ENHYPEN is 6," turning the chat into chaos.
Observing the situation, Jay addressed the fans, saying, "Some of you don't seem to care about what's really happening right now." He continued, "You keep fighting over whether it's 6 or 7 members. I'm okay, but please don't do this to the other members, especially on their birthdays." He expressed his honest feelings, saying, "Today was happy for me, but I'm really anxious. I'm scared that in the future, other members might feel depressed or hurt because of situations like this."
Aftermath of Heeseung's Departure: Fan Protests
ENHYPEN, originally a seven-member group, restructured into a six-member group after the departure of eldest member Heeseung (now known as EVAN) in early March. The news of Heeseung's departure was a significant shock to both the industry and the fandom, known as 'ENGENE.' Despite Heeseung's official announcement to continue as a solo artist, some fans have been campaigning for his return.
Some fans have staged protests in front of HYBE's headquarters in Seoul and Los Angeles, demanding Heeseung's return. They have also flooded the group's social media posts and live broadcasts with comments like "ENHYPEN is 7," expressing collective dissatisfaction.
The conflict even extended to producer El Capitxn (Jang Yi-jeong), who faced speculative criticism for allegedly influencing Heeseung's decision to leave. In response, he closed his social media comments and urged fans to stop sending messages about Heeseung, stating, "Heeseung can make mistakes too. If you're a true fan, you should embrace him before throwing stones."
Support or Entitlement?
This situation highlights the chronic issue of 'blurred boundaries between artists and fans' in K-pop fandom culture. The K-pop industry encourages fans to deeply engage not only with the artists' music but also with their narratives, birthday celebrations, and personal interactions. The strong parasocial relationships formed in this process can generate positive fandom energy but also lead to fans exerting excessive control over artists' lives, decisions, and group dynamics.
Entertainment companies' strategies of monetizing 'closeness' through paid communication platforms (such as Bubble and WEVERSE DM) further accelerate this phenomenon. The emotional closeness felt by fans transforms into a 'commercial right,' overshadowing the artists' personal choices and thoughts with fans' demands.
Jay's message is not merely a defense of the team but a warning that fan support should not compromise the mental health or autonomy of the artists. In the rapidly changing K-pop industry, a mature fandom culture that allows artists and fans to coexist with healthy boundaries is urgently needed.
