Soprano Sumi Jo Signs Exclusive Recording Contract with SM Entertainment
Renowned soprano Sumi Jo has partnered with SM Entertainment.

On the 21st, SM Entertainment announced that they have signed an Exclusive Recording Contract with Sumi Jo for album and music production. This contract is noteworthy as Sumi Jo becomes the first exclusive recording artist under SM's classical label, 'SM Classics.' Through SM Classics, Sumi Jo aims to expand her global reach, starting with the release of her 40th-anniversary album 'Continuum' in May.

Sumi Jo expressed, "This album is both the culmination of a long journey and a new beginning. My music continues to evolve, moving towards new possibilities. The album includes challenging coloratura arias that have not been recorded before, as well as new compositions by contemporary composers. It is a project that breaks the boundaries between classical heritage and modern sensibilities, constantly challenging new music rather than staying on familiar paths. This is my true approach to music." She also mentioned her collaboration with SM to expand Korean classical music.

Set to release in May, 'Continuum' features a repertoire of 11 tracks that encompass Sumi Jo's musical journey. The album includes contributions from composers such as Yiruma, Park Jong-hoon, Kim Jin-hwan, and Choi Jin, with conductor Choi Young-sun and the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra. Notably, it features a duet with EXO's Suho and a collaboration with violinist Danny Koo.

SM Classics has recently restructured by bringing in Jo Hee-kyung, who has experience with global labels like Universal Music and Warner Music, as its new head. Jo stated, "Under the motto 'Classical Heritage, Modern Soul,' we aim to globalize classical, crossover, and jazz music by domestic artists, starting with Sumi Jo's album."

The 'exclusive recording artist' contract with Sumi Jo follows the model of global major labels, providing comprehensive support from planning and recording to distribution of albums and music.

Celebrating her 40th anniversary, Sumi Jo continues to perform on stages worldwide. She recently concluded performances at London's Cadogan Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall in March. Starting in May, she will embark on a national tour in cities including Seoul, Changwon, Bucheon, and Yongin. Additionally, in July, she plans to host the '2nd Sumi Jo International Vocal Competition' at Château de la Ferté-Imbault in France, aiming to nurture future talents and expand the classical music scene.
