SEVENTEEN Dominates 2024 MAMA Awards with Artist and Album of the Year Wins
SEVENTEEN emerged as the stars of the second day of the 2024 MAMA Awards, clinching both the Artist of the Year and Album of the Year awards. Meanwhile, the full-group performance by BIGBANG was a standout moment of the event.
The 2024 MAMA Awards Chapter 2 took place on November 23 at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, with actress Kim Tae-ri hosting the event.
SEVENTEEN took home two of the three grand prizes, solidifying their top position in the industry. On stage, SEVENTEEN's leader S.Coups and member Woozi were visibly emotional, with Woozi expressing, "Every time our team receives an award, my heart feels overwhelmed. It was something unimaginable for us." aespa won the Song of the Year award for 'Supernova'. They shared their gratitude, saying, "We never imagined receiving so much love. Winning at 'MAMA' was our goal this year, and we're thrilled to share this moment with everyone in such a large venue."
The 2024 MAMA introduced a new category, the Music Visionary of the Year, awarded to G-Dragon for his contributions to the K-pop industry. G-Dragon remarked, "It's been a long time, MAMA. It's meaningful to receive this award, both personally and for the group. We've been with MAMA for 17 years."
He thanked MAMA, YG Family, and VIPs, adding, "I don't know if I'll receive this award again, but I won't miss it next year. Thank you." Other notable winners included SEVENTEEN and aespa for Best Male and Female Group, (G)I-DLE for Best Vocal Performance, and BIBI for Best Vocal Performance Solo. Actor Byun Woo-seok won the Favorite Global Trending Music award for his OST 'Sonagi'. Performances by SEVENTEEN, aespa, (G)I-DLE, and ZEROBASEONE captivated the audience. Notably, (G)I-DLE's Soyeon addressed former member Soojin's departure and her contract's end in her solo rap. The highlight of the night was G-Dragon and BIGBANG's full-group performance. G-Dragon performed his new song 'Power', followed by 'Home Sweet Home' featuring Taeyang and Daesung.
Dressed in hot pink, G-Dragon's performance was electrifying, with the audience and fellow artists, including SEVENTEEN and BIBI, joining in the excitement. BIGBANG also performed a medley of their hits, turning the venue into a concert-like atmosphere.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the 'MAMA Awards' theme was 'BIG BLUR: What is Real?', focusing on the fusion of different elements to create something new. The event kicked off on November 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and continued in Japan over two days.
