Park Shin-yang Returns to Film After 11 Years with Occult Horror 'Devils Stay'
Park Shin-yang shares his thoughts on returning to the big screen after 11 years with the film 'Devils Stay'.
On the 12th, a press screening and conference for the movie 'Devils Stay' was held at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Director Hyun Moon-seop, along with actors Park Shin-yang, Lee Min-ki, and Lee Re, attended the event.
'Devils Stay' is an occult horror film that unfolds over the three days of a funeral, where an exorcism is performed to prevent something from awakening in the heart of a deceased daughter. Park Shin-yang plays Seung-do, a thoracic surgeon and a father with boundless love for his daughter. Lee Min-ki portrays Hae-shin, an exorcist priest who senses something amiss in the deceased heart. Lee Re plays So-mi, a possessed girl who exhibits strange symptoms after a heart transplant and loses her life during the exorcism.
Park Shin-yang returns to film with 'Devils Stay' after 11 years since 'Man on the Edge' (2013). He expressed, “I ended up doing a movie after a long time. During the break, I worked on dramas and painting. Both require a lot of time, which is why it's been a while since I did a film. Movies require drawing out emotional intensity within a timeframe, which feels different. But it's still an intriguing genre.”
Park Shin-yang revealed his newfound interest in the occult genre, saying, “I didn't think occult was a genre I liked, but I ended up studying it a lot. It was fascinating to explore it intensively.” He added, “It's a powerful feeling that I can't quite describe as emotion. It's different from the emotions I've felt before. It seems like fear is maximized. In occult mysteries, the effect is greater when the unseen is amplified.”
He also shared his efforts to enhance the mystery, stating, “We had many discussions on how to make the unseen presence more significant. I think we had about 100 meetings, each lasting 10 hours.”
'Devils Stay' is set to be released on the 14th.
