Interview with director Jang Hang-jun of the movie ‘Rebound’

On the morning of the 31st, director Jang Hang-jun told various stories related to the upcoming movie 'Rebound' at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
'Rebound' is a miraculous story of 8 days during the 2012 National High School Basketball Tournament, when a new coach and 6 players of the weakest basketball team that no one paid attention to ran tirelessly. It is based on the true story of Busan Jungang High School's success in the 2012 Korea Basketball Association Long National Middle and High School Basketball Tournament.
Director Jang Hang-jun, who was in charge of directing, returned to the screen six years after the movie 'A Night of Remembrance'. Through 'Rebound', he conveys a message of empathy and hope by depicting the brilliant growth story of a youth who falls and gets back up again with passion and spirit for loving basketball, with laughter and warm humanity.
The VIP preview of 'Rebound' will be held at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall on April 3 at 7 p.m. Director Jang Hang-jun served as a co-MC with BTS RM through tvN's 'Useful Job'. He invited RM to the VIP preview.
On this day, director Jang Hang-jun said, "Of course, I told RM clearly. I don't hide my purpose and intentions when I talk. I said, 'Namjoon, I want to benefit from you for once.' I always say that. I brought coffee to Mr. Sol Kyung-gu. “The reason I asked them to send it was to catch Gao. So I asked RM to preview it when the time comes,” he said, drawing laughter.

He continued, "This story was beyond my memory, but I wondered if it was a process like this. I didn't know this process. When I compared the scenario with the actual story, there were some parts that were slightly different. I first received the scenario five years ago. I said I had to see it and do it. ( My wife, writer Kim Eun-hee, asked me, ‘What did you decide to do, Oppa?’ and I said, ‘I have to do it.’ He then said, ‘I will take a look.’ After seeing it, he said, ‘You must do this,’ and ‘Can I try to fix it?’ “He said,” he added.
Director Jang Hang-jun said, "Actually, writer Kim Eun-hee was very busy, and she said, 'I want to fix it.' I guess writer Kim Eun-hee writes well. As she gets older, she loses concentration, so it's not easy to write a scenario," he said, making people laugh. He also explained, "We revised the scenario and wrote the story together, but the goal was one. It had a touch of fiction, but it was to exclude fiction as much as possible and make it as realistic as possible. We decided to direct and cast in the same way."
Director Jang Hang-jun said, "I did research at the time and met with current coach Yang-hyeon Kang and interviewed him. After watching the actual game video, I think it took writer Eun-hee Kim about 20 days to create and edit the scene. Of course, she fixed it well. I adapted it one more time. I gave it to the company and they did it. “I said, ‘I think it’s so good.’ In fact, basketball is still not as popular a sport in Korea as it used to be. ‘Rebound’ is a high school story, but there weren’t many investors willing to invest money. They said it was a mild taste,” he confessed.
In addition, director Jang Hang-jun said, "While looking at the scenario, seeing the actual story, and revising the scenario, my blood boiled and I thought, 'I really want to do this.' I did it 5 years ago. I also assembled the entire staff. However, I became frustrated at the final step, so I decided to do it." "We disbanded a year ago. We had 500 people audition for basketball, and at that time, former national team coach Cho Sang-hyeon participated in the audition. I didn't have any regrets. I thought I should do something else, so I was preparing and decided to do it when the time came," he said.
Director Jang Hang-jun then said, “Two or three years ago, CEO Jang Won-seok called and said, ‘I think it’s done.’ I met Nexon’s CEO and he said, ‘Our goal is not to make money.’ If we wanted to make money, we should have done something bigger. However, Nexon said that they wanted this work to be the starting point of the movie. So they said they would invest the entire amount. I drank a lot that day. I contacted the staff. The staff also liked the scenario and wanted to make a movie. 5 years. “Many of the staff who had prepared before waited,” he said.
Meanwhile, 'Rebound', directed by director Jang Hang-jun, will be released on April 5.
