Lee Hwi-jae Returns to Broadcasting After 4-Year Hiatus: Mixed Reactions from the Public
On the 5th, it was revealed that Lee Hwi-jae would participate in the recording of KBS2's 'Immortal Songs'. A KBS representative confirmed, "Lee Hwi-jae will appear on 'Immortal Songs' and will participate as a contestant in the recording scheduled for the 16th at KBS Yeouido's new building public hall."
Earlier, on the 3rd, Lee Hwi-jae's wife, Moon Jung-won, also made headlines by updating her social media for the first time in about 3 years and 7 months. This fueled speculation about Lee Hwi-jae's potential return, and just two days later, news of his TV appearance confirmed his comeback.
Public reactions are sharply divided. Some express sentiments like "We missed him," "Curious about Seo-eon and Seo-jun," and "Welcome back," while others respond with "Why is he back?", "I don't want to see him again," and "Is he returning already after being quiet for a while?"
Lee Hwi-jae faced criticism for his remarks and behavior at various award shows and variety programs, notably for asking actor Sung Dong-il, who was wearing a padded jacket at the 2016 'SBS Drama Awards', if he was a PD, which was deemed disrespectful. Moon Jung-won also faced backlash over issues like undisclosed advertising, noise complaints from neighbors, and allegations of not paying for toys at an amusement park.
Moon Jung-won issued a handwritten apology, acknowledging, "I know that I brought these situations upon myself. I will take time to reflect." Subsequently, the couple moved to Canada in 2022 and abruptly halted their activities. Lee Hwi-jae's departure without further explanation led to rumors of retirement and emigration.
Lee Hwi-jae, a veteran broadcaster, had garnered significant trust and expectations from the public. Critics argue that his approach to handling controversies should have matched his experience.
However, some believe the harsh criticism towards the couple is excessive. While there were controversies, there were no serious criminal acts or issues warranting a complete halt in their activities. Having taken nearly four years off for reflection, there is no justification to prevent their return.
