Ahn Sun-young Opens Up About Caring for Her Mother with Dementia and the Importance of Financial Stability
On October 4th, Ahn Sun-young's YouTube channel 'This is Ahn Sun-young' released a video titled 'Wearing Luxury Brands Won't Hide This.' In the video, Ahn revealed, "I lived in poverty until I was 49. Even though I earned a lot from appearances, I was always worried that if I turned down a job, the companies or programs wouldn't call me back."
She continued, "Even now, I feel like I could live comfortably without working as long as I don't indulge in extravagance. But I still worry, 'What if they speak ill of me if I refuse?'" Ahn added, "The gratitude, guilt, responsibility, and obligation from those who hired me when I was poor weighed heavily on me."
Ahn Sun-young confessed that last year her mother, who was suffering from severe dementia, had a stroke. She shared, "I saw her unable to control her bodily functions and restrained in the hospital, losing her basic human dignity like an animal. That's when I realized that when one family member's health completely collapses, the rest of the family becomes unhappy."
Ahn expressed relief that she had the financial means to hire a caregiver for her mother. She recalled, "The hospital bills were enormous. I regretted not having caregiver insurance, but I was grateful to have enough savings to ensure my child didn't see their grandmother unable to go to the bathroom by herself."
Meanwhile, Ahn Sun-young appeared with her mother, who is battling dementia, on the TV Chosun variety show 'Joseon's Love Army' on September 12th. In the broadcast, Ahn expressed regret, saying, "I really regretted bringing my mom on the show. I hated being asked about my sick mom for the past seven years." However, she added, "But thinking about it, being able to appear on the show with my mom was truly a blessing. Even though her memory is fading, she is happy in the moments she remembers."
