Actor Um Tae-goo is set to showcase a new side of himself in the film 'Wild Thing' directed by Son Jae-gon. He takes on the role of Sang-gu, the youngest member and a stormy rapper of the mixed-gender dance group Triangle, promising to display unrestrained swag instead of his usual overwhelming charisma.
'Wild Thing' is a comedy film about Triangle, a three-member mixed-gender dance group that once dominated the music scene but disbanded overnight due to an unexpected incident. Twenty years later, they embark on a reckless challenge to seize a comeback opportunity. With music videos and member introduction clips gaining traction online, Um Tae-goo's portrayal in 'Wild Thing' promises a never-before-seen performance.
Um Tae-goo, known for his intense charisma in films like 'Night in Paradise', 'The Great Battle', and 'The Age of Shadows', has also charmed audiences with his quirky appeal in the romantic comedy 'The Woman Who Plays' and the YouTube series 'Workman'. In 'Wild Thing', he takes on the role of Sang-gu, the stormy rapper of Triangle, marking a significant transformation in his acting career.
In the released stills, Sang-gu (played by Um Tae-goo) is seen holding a microphone and performing energetically on stage, styled in a way reminiscent of 90s idols. Under neon lights and a vibrant backdrop, he delivers a high-energy performance. Another still shows Sang-gu in hip-hop attire with long hair, sitting with exaggerated hip-hop gestures and expressions, highlighting the film's comedic and lively atmosphere.
Sang-gu, who once dreamed of being a true hip-hop warrior but only had a few lines in songs, finds himself struggling as an insurance agent after his solo album flops post-disbandment. Um Tae-goo portrays the passionate yet struggling 'failed rapper' with a mix of seriousness and humor, delivering a bittersweet comedy.
Um Tae-goo shared, "The character of Sang-gu was new to me in every way, and participating in this project was a challenge in itself." To prepare for the role, he spent five months in 'trainee mode' at JYP Entertainment, receiving training from Kass, a producer who has worked with GOT7, Stray Kids, and NMIXX. He learned rap-making, styling, hair, and stage gestures, mastering everything from his unique husky voice in 'train whistle rapping' to diverse expressions, poses, and choreography, creating a distinctive comedic character.
'Wild Thing' will hit theaters on June 3.
