Renowned dog trainer Kang Hyung-wook has, for the first time in his career, declared his inability to provide a solution for the extreme aggression displayed by an American Bully named 'Gu-eok'. The dog's behavior has become so severe that its owner is contemplating euthanasia.
On the October 18th episode of Channel A's show 'Time of Dogs and Wolves 2', the story of Gu-eok, an American Bully with intense aggression, was revealed. Kang Hyung-wook's unprecedented decision to abandon a solution left a heavy impression.
Why is Gu-eok displaying such extreme aggression?
Gu-eok showed an unusual obsession with leashes. During walks, instead of exploring or sniffing around, he persistently bit the leash and lunged at other dogs in sight. Even when his mouth bled, he refused to let go, shocking the studio audience.
Kang Hyung-wook explained, "Gu-eok is not attacking out of anger; the biting behavior itself has already been reinforced." He analyzed that it was more instinctual than emotional. He further diagnosed, "It seems as if he has no emotions."
Inside the home, Gu-eok's behavior made normal living impossible. Conflicts with other pets led to a life of separation, with the owner essentially confined to the bedroom to manage Gu-eok. The owner expressed a simple wish, "I want to live with the door open."
Why did Kang Hyung-wook ultimately give up?
Despite the owner's hopes, the severity of the situation became clearer during the intervention. Gu-eok showed no interest in Kang Hyung-wook, not even sniffing or showing any wariness. Sensing something amiss, Kang fitted Gu-eok with a 'pinch collar' with metal hooks. Even under pressure and pain that could cause bleeding, Gu-eok continued to bite the leash obsessively. Both Kang and the owner watched in dismay.
Kang Hyung-wook speculated that the stimulation from biting might be stronger than the pain. He questioned, "Is there a need for training?" and admitted, "I think my ability ends here." It was a moment of conceding defeat on the show.
Kang advised the owner that it was difficult to keep Gu-eok in the current environment, especially in a communal building. The owner faced a tough decision: consider euthanasia or manage Gu-eok in a permanently separated space. The owner, visibly upset, admitted the lack of treatment or training options was most distressing.
In a phone call three weeks later, the owner declared, "I will not euthanize him." Committed to caring for Gu-eok until his last day, even if it meant living in confinement, the owner chose responsibility over convenience. It was a poignant moment where the instincts of a wolf met human responsibility.
'Time of Dogs and Wolves 2' airs every Wednesday at 10 PM.
