Former Speed Skater Kim Bo-reum Opens Up About Life After Retirement

Former speed skating champion Kim Bo-reum shares her post-retirement struggles.

On the upcoming episode of KBS Joy's 'Ask Anything', airing on the 23rd at 8:30 PM, Kim Bo-reum, the silver medalist in the mass start event at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, will make an appearance.

Having served as a national representative from 2010 to 2024, Kim Bo-reum, who clinched a silver medal at PyeongChang and a gold, silver, and bronze at the 2017 Sapporo games, will discuss her concerns about her second life after retirement on 'Ask Anything'.

Kim reveals, “As of the recording date, it's been about three weeks since I retired,” and announces her official retirement date as December 31, 2025. She reflects, “I believe my peak as an athlete was at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics,” adding, “My original dream was to retire after winning a gold medal at an international competition.” She admits, “Since PyeongChang 2018, I've contemplated retirement every year.”

During the PyeongChang games, Kim faced harsh criticism due to the 'bullying run' controversy, which took a long time to resolve. She shares, “I was young and hurt, but the experience made me stronger, and I am confident I won't easily crumble,” expressing her hopes and concerns for her second life.

In response, Lee Soo-geun advises, “Only by reaching the pinnacle in one field and achieving accomplishments can you be recognized in your second life,” and suggests, “You need to praise yourself for the achievements you've worked hard for.” Seo Jang-hoon also encourages her, saying, “You're only 33, just starting your second life.”

Kim, who is considering broadcasting, commentary, and coaching, and has expressed interest in studying psychology due to her experiences, receives practical advice from Seo Jang-hoon: “The answer lies within your story. Thoroughly consider what you can excel at and how you can differentiate yourself from others.”

Additionally, Lee Soo-geun emphasizes, “If you start broadcasting, who you start with is important,” humorously adding, “Seo Jang-hoon succeeded because he was with me for a long time.” Seo Jang-hoon acknowledges, “Lee Soo-geun's contribution to my success today is significant.”

Meanwhile, Kim Bo-reum was at the center of the 'bullying run' controversy during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, accused of leaving teammate Noh Seon-yeong behind in the team pursuit event. However, a special investigation by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism concluded that there was no intentional bullying, leading to her reinstatement as a national representative.
