Netflix Faces Scrutiny Over Vetting Process After Chef Im's Criminal History Revealed

The recent revelation of Chef Lim Sung-geun's criminal history has sparked a debate over Netflix's responsibility in vetting participants for its shows. Chef Lim, who gained attention through Netflix's variety show 'Black and White Chef 2,' has announced his withdrawal from broadcasting activities following the confirmation of his six criminal convictions, including DUI and assault.

Chef Lim recently admitted on his YouTube channel to three DUI offenses, but court documents revealed additional violations of traffic laws in 1998 and 1999. Furthermore, a past mutual assault incident resulting in a fine has come to light, bringing his total criminal convictions to six.

In March 1998, Chef Lim was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and fined 300,000 won for traffic law violations. In August 1999, he was fined 500,000 won for driving a motorcycle under the influence. Reports indicate he was detained for this incident. His record also includes driving with a revoked license and involvement in an assault case.

Following the controversy, Chef Lim claimed in multiple media interviews that he had informed Netflix of his DUI history before appearing on the show. He stated, "Various procedures, including filling out a questionnaire and psychological evaluation, are conducted before appearing on the show to prevent accidents during filming." He added that he disclosed his most recent offense as "a 2020 DUI incident" in the personal history section.

However, Netflix's account differs. The company stated, "The production team only confirmed one DUI incident from 2020 during the casting and pre-screening process. We were not informed of any additional criminal convictions."

At the 'Next on Netflix 2026 Korea' event on the 21st, Netflix addressed the issue of vetting non-celebrity participants. Director Yoo Ki-hwan acknowledged the challenges, saying, "As reality shows expand, viewers seek more raw reality, and we are casting and producing a diverse range of participants to meet this demand."

He continued, "There are clear limitations in thoroughly verifying each individual's history or criminal record, but we strive to check as much as possible within legal boundaries." He emphasized, "We are continually considering how to address issues that cannot be detected and are taking the best possible measures within the permitted legal scope."

Despite emphasizing the limitations of their vetting system, Netflix faces criticism for proceeding with Chef Lim's appearance despite being aware of his 2020 DUI history. The controversy highlights the need for clearer standards and accountability in vetting non-celebrity participants.
