British band Oasis has sparked controversy by posting an image resembling the Rising Sun flag on social media ahead of their upcoming concert in South Korea.
On October 8, Oasis shared a video on their social media with the caption, "Check out the new visuals for 'Morning Glory.'"
The video featured various images representing their 1995 release 'Morning Glory,' including a scene with a rising sun that appeared to incorporate the design of the Rising Sun flag, a symbol associated with Japanese imperialism.
Korean netizens criticized the post, leaving comments such as "Take down the video and apologize," "Are you not planning to perform in Korea?" "What is this just before Liberation Day?" "You want to make money in Korea but don't respect it? Disappointing," and "Learn history first." Despite the backlash, Oasis has not issued a statement four days after the post.
Last month, band member Liam Gallagher faced criticism for making a derogatory remark about Asians. He posted "ching chong" on his social media, a racial slur against East Asians. Although initially dismissive of the criticism, he later deleted the post and apologized, saying, "I'm sorry if I upset anyone. I love all people and do not discriminate."
Meanwhile, Oasis is set to perform in South Korea for the first time in 16 years on October 21 at the Goyang Sports Complex.
