Ji Suk-jin Takes on Netflix with 'Manhakdo Ji-ssi': A New Era of Reality Knowledge Exploration
On the 27th, a press conference for Netflix's 'Manhakdo Ji-ssi' was held at a cafe in Sangam-dong, Seoul. Present at the event were Ji Suk-jin, Oh My Girl's Mimi, and director Jeong Do-dam.
'Manhakdo Ji-ssi' is a reality knowledge exploration show that breaks down the barriers of knowledge with raw questions. Ji Suk-jin, who is passionate about learning even at the age of sixty, and Oh My Girl member Mimi, known for her sharp questions, will host the show.
Regarding the casting of Ji Suk-jin and Mimi, Jeong said, "We needed someone curious who could ask any question bravely," and "Ji Suk-jin came to mind as someone with a wide range of experiences and questions." He added, "Considering the synergy across generations, we cast Mimi from Oh My Girl, and we believe the combination of the two is the core of the program."
When asked about the reaction of his close 'Running Man' members to his first Netflix venture, Ji Suk-jin said, "It's a very happy occasion. (Yoo) Jae-suk was pleased, and this is just the beginning," adding, "You can only smile if the ratings are good." He continued, "I haven't talked much about this with the other members. Jae-suk mentioned it on set, saying he was very happy and hoped it would do well. Personally, it's an honor, and I hope it succeeds." He also expressed his anticipation, saying, "Netflix has rankings, and being mentioned by people is important."
Last year, Ji Suk-jin launched a program under his name after winning an award on the YouTube channel 'Pinggye-go.' Regarding this, Ji Suk-jin said, "I was worried it might not happen, but fortunately, I received it and was congratulated."
He continued, "Other broadcasters also talk about awards, but in my life, awards aren't that important," adding, "Of course, it's an honor and I'm grateful, but I don't want to feel burdened by the weight of the award," indirectly mentioning the SBS 'Entertainment Awards' where he was not awarded last year. He also shared his changed perspective, saying, "In the past, I thought 'I've lived enough to deserve an award,' but now I'm just grateful for everything. I'm thankful to be talking here." He added, "It would be a lie to say there's no weight on my shoulders. I feel I need to work harder."
Additionally, he said, "When I first received the proposal for 'Manhakdo Ji-ssi' after winning the award, I felt good. I thought, 'I've come a long way.' Originally, it was 'Manhakdo Ji Suk-jin,' but it changed to 'Ji-ssi,' which I liked better," and candidly shared, "I thought I should take it easy to avoid taking unnecessary risks."
Ji Suk-jin stated, "Of course, I'm hosting the beginning and end, but I think a collaborative hosting style is more natural than one person leading," expressing his belief. He also mentioned that he has no competitive spirit towards Yoo Jae-suk, saying, "Before 'Running Man,' I also had a time as a main MC, but the broadcasting environment has changed a lot now." He added, "Even if I want to joke, I'm cautious because it might become a joke if it gets published," and expressed his affection, saying, "Jae-suk isn't a competitor, but a friend I want to go with. We often talk outside of broadcasting and plan to stay friends even after retirement."
'Manhakdo Ji-ssi' will premiere on Netflix on the 30th at 5 PM, releasing episodes 1 and 2. Subsequent episodes will be released every Monday at 5 PM.
