Korean TV Personality Lee Hwi-jae Returns to Broadcasting After Four-Year Hiatus
According to industry sources, Lee will participate in the recording of 'Immortal Songs' on the 16th at KBS's new building. The episode, themed '2026 Entertainment King Special', will feature other entertainers such as Jo Hye-ryun, Hong Seok-cheon, Park Jun-hyung, Moon Se-yoon, Kim Shin-young, Cheon Dam-bi, and the 'Gag Concert' team. The broadcast is scheduled for the 28th and the following month on the 4th.
With news of his return, past controversies surrounding Lee have resurfaced. In 2016, during the 'SBS Drama Awards', he faced backlash for inappropriate remarks. He was criticized for comments made to actor Sung Dong-il, suggesting he looked like a crew member, and for making singer Gummy's then-public relationship with Jo Jung-suk awkward. Additionally, he asked Namgoong Min to mention co-star Minah's flaws, further fueling the controversy. Lee later apologized, admitting his attempt to be entertaining went too far.
Amidst these controversies, Lee effectively halted his broadcasting activities in 2022 and moved to Canada with his family. This led to ongoing speculation about his retirement and emigration.
Recently, however, there have been signs of his potential return. Moon Jung-won shared updates on social media after a four-year hiatus, and news of Lee's upcoming TV appearance has fueled speculation about his comeback.
The announcement of Lee's return has elicited mixed reactions from the public. Some express excitement and eagerness to see him back on screen, while others feel his return is premature given past controversies.
As Lee Hwi-jae prepares to step back onto the stage through 'Immortal Songs', all eyes are on whether this marks a successful comeback for the TV personality.
