Jang Keun-suk Shines as Versatile Host and Chef on MBC's 'Discovery of the Dining Table'
On January 17, Jang appeared on the second episode of MBC's Lunar New Year special, 'Discovery of the Dining Table,' titled 'The Table of Emptiness for Myself.' Alongside chefs Yoon Nam-no, David Lee, and Fabry, Jang visited Bongnyeongsa Temple in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, where they learned about the 'Table of Emptiness' from Monk Seonjae.
Jang seamlessly guided the show, introducing the temple's scenery and demonstrating his skills as an MC. When Monk Seonjae offered cornelian cherries from the courtyard, Jang tasted them without hesitation, describing them as "sweet," and showed a sincere appreciation for each ingredient.
Jang stayed close to Monk Seonjae, eager to learn the philosophy of emptiness. He expressed curiosity about the five forbidden vegetables in temple cuisine, known as 'osinchai' (wild chives, leeks, onions, garlic, and green onions), asking insightful questions like how to substitute garlic, a staple in Korean cooking. He also diligently assisted by preparing carrots.
Before the main meal, Jang drank soy sauce tea to awaken his body's energy, vividly describing its taste to engage viewers' senses. He was captivated by the deep flavor of 20-year-old soy sauce, sharing his delight with a smile. After tasting temple kimchi made without osinchai, he recommended pairing it with noodles, sharing his unique culinary combinations and immersing himself in the refined charm of temple cuisine. Jang, who was thoroughly enjoying the meal, even suggested that those with frequent anger try temple food for its calming effect, acting as an ambassador for temple cuisine.
Jang Keun-suk led the atmosphere with smooth hosting and lively reactions. His sincere approach to temple cuisine and attention to its philosophical value enhanced the program's engagement. Anticipation builds for the next culinary story he will share in the final episode.
The third episode of MBC's 'Discovery of the Dining Table' will air on January 24 at 9 PM.
