Korean Celebrity Gree Faces Controversy Over Military Discharge Day TV Appearance

Gree, the son of Korean entertainer Kim Gura, sparked controversy by participating in the recording of the variety show 'Radio Star' on the day of his military discharge. The Marine Corps clarified that the appearance was approved through proper procedures.

On January 28, the day of his discharge, Gree appeared on MBC's 'Radio Star,' and the episode aired on February 4. Just about four hours after completing his 549-day military service, Gree appeared on set in his military uniform and officially announced his discharge. He expressed his gratitude to his father, Kim Gura, saying, "I have been ordered to return to the arms of my beloved parents," and bowed deeply, creating a heartwarming moment. Kim Gura responded by placing a flower necklace on Gree and embracing him.

During the show, Gree candidly shared stories from his time in the Marine Corps, how he has changed during his service, and his mindset after discharge. Kim Gura was visibly moved by his son's maturity.

However, controversy arose when it was revealed that the recording took place on Gree's discharge day. According to Article 159 of the Civil Code, a soldier becomes a civilian the day after discharge, with active duty status maintained until midnight of the discharge day. Additionally, military regulations prohibit soldiers from engaging in profit-making activities or receiving appearance fees like civilians. This led netizens to question whether Gree engaged in profit-making activities on his discharge day.

In response, the Marine Corps stated, "The broadcast appearance was conducted following unit approval procedures in accordance with the Defense Public Relations Directive," and clarified that "Reservist Sergeant Kim Dong-hyun was aware of his active duty status during the recording and participated through normal procedures," dismissing the controversy.
