Yoon Ji-sung Reflects on His Journey from Wanna One Leader to Acclaimed Actor
Introducing the brightest rising stars in the entertainment industry.
"I thought that once Wanna One's activities ended, I wouldn't receive even a tenth of the attention and love I had back then. Because I anticipated and worried about it in advance, I didn't feel empty or regretful after the activities ended. I did my best because I felt that way."
Yoon Ji-sung shared these thoughts during a recent interview at a café in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The former leader of Wanna One and now an actor, Yoon Ji-sung first caught the public's eye with his witty communication style on the 2017 show 'Produce 101 Season 2'. Born in 1991, he was 27 at the time, having spent a long period as a trainee and was relatively older than his peers.
Despite this, Yoon Ji-sung did not feel intimidated and established his presence with his unique leadership style, creating a friendly image among the trainees. His bright energy and character resonated with fans, leading to a strong fanbase. Ultimately, he debuted successfully, ranking 8th and taking on the significant role of leader in the 11-member group Wanna One.
In person, Yoon Ji-sung was both serious and humorous, answering each question with honesty and adding his unique wit to the conversation. The interview flowed comfortably, like a radio show.
When asked why he expected his popularity to wane after Wanna One, Yoon Ji-sung paused, smiled, and said, "I just had a feeling it would be that way. It was instinctive. I thought the other members would do well, and they are doing great, which makes me proud. But for some reason, I felt I wouldn't be able to do the same." He added, "However, thanks to my fans, I have been able to keep going. I am who I am today because of my fans, the 'Rice Grains'."
"I debuted relatively late. During my seven years as a trainee, I was anxious about not becoming a singer. I prepared for graduate school alongside my debut, as it was a goal I had planned for a long time. When I debuted, I couldn't attend due to my entertainment activities, but as things settled, I decided I could attend diligently."
After Wanna One's activities ended, he enlisted in the army in May 2019 and was discharged in December 2020. He began his acting career with the drama 'Let Me Be Your Knight' in November 2021. Last year, he appeared in two consecutive works, 'Living with a Rich Man Only I Can See' and 'Thunderstorm', showcasing a new side as a drama character after four years.
Yoon Ji-sung expressed, "The feelings of gratitude and longing are different. I am very grateful for the interest and support from the Wanna One days to now, but I don't want to go back to those days or miss them. I prioritize the present and strive to do my best where I am now."
