SM Entertainment, a cornerstone of K-pop, seems to falter outside the realm of idol production. This is evident with their R&B singer-songwriter Min Ji-woon, under the label KRUCIALIZE. Min Ji-woon presents as an unpolished 'gem' in the industry.

On October 22, at 1 PM, Min Ji-woon released his debut EP 'Pink, then grey'. As part of SM's contemporary R&B label KRUCIALIZE, he explores various sub-genres of R&B.

While Min Ji-woon's EP is well-rounded in terms of tone and concept, it lacks a standout element that leaves a lasting impression. It raises questions about his competitive edge compared to other singer-songwriters in the market.

His vocal style blends the delicate and familiar emotions reminiscent of artists like Baek Yerin and Kwon Jin-ah. Although pleasant to listen to, his vocal prowess does not surpass existing artists. As a singer-songwriter, he does not perform live with instruments on stage, and his pitch wavers during performances, possibly due to nerves. This suggests he is not yet fully prepared to shine as an artist.

During a media showcase on October 21, Min Ji-woon was asked about his unique strengths. He struggled to provide a definitive answer, stating that his "distinctive vocal tone and musical sensibility" set him apart, yet he failed to clearly articulate what makes his musical sensibility unique. He also mentioned that while he can play the keyboard, he needs more preparation to perform live on stage.

The EP lacks a memorable 'hook' that captures the listener's attention, making it an album that flows without leaving a strong impression.

Visually, Min Ji-woon's presence is ambiguous. Unlike idols, singer-songwriters typically have a distinct aura, which he lacks. Although his beautiful appearance is well-captured in photos and videos, singer-songwriters are not consumed solely for their looks. He needs to reflect more on what makes him uniquely appealing.

Min Ji-woon is neither an indie artist nor an idol from a major agency, which is seen as a significant issue. This is a common critique when major agencies produce solo singer-songwriters. Baek Yerin, formerly of JYP Entertainment, gained attention while with the agency but truly found success after leaving. Given Min Ji-woon's indie-inspired genre and sensibility, he might have attracted more attention from indie music fans if his EP had shed the 'major agency' influence.

SM describes Min Ji-woon as a "contemporary R&B artist," but this label seems to be a collection of complex terms due to his unclear identity. Neither SM nor Min Ji-woon himself has effectively communicated who he is as an artist.
