Lee Sang Yi Reflects on 'Good Boy' Finale and His Journey as Kim Jong Hyun

Lee Sang Yi played the role of 'Kim Jong Hyun', an elite fencing silver medalist and a sergeant in the special task force, in the JTBC weekend drama 'Good Boy', which concluded on the 20th. His performance showcased a blend of cold judgment and warm humanity.
With thrilling action scenes, Lee Sang Yi brought stability and catharsis to the audience whenever the 'Good Avengers' faced danger. He also portrayed Jong Hyun's unwavering love and dedication to Ji Han Na (played by Kim So Hyun), captivating viewers. Additionally, his bromance with Yoon Dong Joo (played by Park Bo Gum) added warmth to the series.

Lee Sang Yi is set to return to the stage as 'Will Shakespeare' in the play 'Shakespeare in Love', marking his theatrical comeback after two years. He will also host the 2025 Lee Sang Yi fan meeting 'This is Lee Sang Yi' on August 9th at Shinhan Card SOL Pay Square Live Hall, continuing his busy schedule.
Here is a Q&A with Lee Sang Yi.
Q. How do you feel about saying goodbye to 'Good Boy'?
A. The time spent with 'Good Boy' was like a precious gift to me. Thanks to the invaluable connections made during the drama, I was able to shine and grow once again. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who loved 'Good Boy', including our special team and staff who became like family during the long shoot. I was very, very happy.
Q. What do you think made the drama and your character so beloved?
A. I would highlight the non-stop action, fast-paced storyline, and most importantly, the teamwork of our special team.

A. I would describe him as a 'warm iced Americano'. Jong Hyun appears cold and sharp on the outside, but he is warm-hearted and responsible inside. I think many found this aspect of him appealing.
Q. What are the similarities and differences between you and Kim Jong Hyun?
A. We both share determination and perseverance. However, unlike Jong Hyun, I am not particularly athletic or talented. Also, unlike Jong Hyun, I have a close bond with my brother.
Q. How did you prepare to play Kim Jong Hyun?
A. Since Jong Hyun is a former international fencing silver medalist, I underwent over six months of consistent fencing training. Specifically, I studied the steps and attack moves of actual sabre fencers, as Jong Hyun is a sabre fencer. I also practiced techniques for subduing opponents with a baton.
Q. Were there any challenges in portraying Kim Jong Hyun?
A. It was my first time doing action scenes with weapons, which was challenging. Jong Hyun is skilled in both fencing and taekwondo, so I had to practice kicking a lot. I also worked hard to naturally express Jong Hyun's feelings as he quietly nurtures his love for Han Na while dealing with the arrival of Dong Joo.
Q. Do you have a memorable line or scene?
A. 'I can do it.' This is what Jong Hyun said while fencing. It's a line that was essential for Jong Hyun as he was finding his true self, so it remains memorable to me.

A. I would say it was number one. Even after filming ended, we keep in touch and miss each other a lot. During filming, we often ate together and took many sticker and Polaroid photos. I think this chemistry was well reflected in the work.
Q. Do you have any memorable episodes from filming?
A. Every day was memorable because we always had so much fun that it was hard to hold back laughter. If I had to pick one, it would be when Park Bo Gum helped and reassured me before an underwater shoot, as I was afraid of diving. Thanks to him, I was able to complete the underwater shoot successfully. This memory is vividly etched in my mind.
Q. Any final words for the viewers?
A. I hope the fun and messages in 'Good Boy' provided encouragement and strength to many. Thank you once again to all the viewers who stayed with 'Good Boy' until the end.
