Spotlight on Rising Stars: Catching Up with Promising Talents in the Entertainment Industry

"We are all aware that our fans have been waiting for a long time. I feel sorry for not being able to address it sooner. Although there are no concrete plans yet, I believe that the longer hiatus will lead to greater synergy when we reunite. Until that day comes, I will do my best in my position, so please watch over us warmly."

Following their victory in 'Queendom 2', fans anticipated active group activities from WJSN. However, in 2023, news broke that members Luda and Dawon did not renew their contracts. In response, leader Choo So-jung (Exy) expressed, "I don't personally see it as a 'reorganization into an 8-member group.' We are still a 10-member group," showing her deep affection for the group. Despite disbandment rumors after WJSN filmed separate college entrance exam support videos last November, Choo So-jung firmly denied them and asked fans to wait for their reunion.

Choo So-jung, who debuted as the leader and main rapper of WJSN in February 2016, was interviewed at the Ten Asia office in Jungnim-dong, Seoul, on the 19th of last month. Known for her versatility as Exy, she is now focusing on her acting career under her real name, Choo So-jung.

Choo So-jung showcased her stable acting skills as the lead in the 2021 drama 'IDOL [Idol: The Coup]' and made a memorable cameo in 'Marry You' as Lee Yi-kyung's blind date last November. She is currently awaiting the release of the drama 'Heo's Restaurant' and the film 'Eighteen Youth' while filming 'Divorce Insurance.'

"I've been auditioning for roles for over two years now. I've faced a lot of rejections, which was painful, but it also gave me the courage and maturity to persevere."

After numerous auditions, Choo So-jung was cast as the lead in 'Heo's Restaurant.' She admitted, "I never imagined I'd get the lead role. I'm thrilled and grateful, but it was also daunting. I had never worked on such a long project before, so I was worried. Still, I feel proud of giving it my all."

"I still live with Dayoung and Juyeon (Eunseo) in the dorm. Having lived alone in Seoul, I cherish and enjoy living with the members. Even in mundane daily life, talking with them brings laughter. Plus, Seoul's housing prices are high (laughs). There's no reason to move out."

Choo So-jung, along with Kim Ji-yeon (Bona) and Son Ju-yeon, is actively pursuing acting careers. She shared, "I've auditioned for the same projects as my members quite a few times. Nowadays, we audition for roles that suit our individual characters, so there's less overlap."

"When we audition for the same project, I don't feel the urge to outshine anyone. I genuinely hope that one of us gets the role. We never think someone got the part because they're superior or failed because they're lacking. We just believe it's a better fit for the role. That's why we can sincerely congratulate each other."

"While it seems like I'm focusing on acting, I'm also actively involved in music. I haven't chosen one over the other. I've always dreamed of being a versatile entertainer. I want to cherish and make the most of every opportunity."

Choo So-jung has been involved in producing music for various artists, including WJSN, IVE, The Boyz, Cravity, and recently, I-LIT. She smiled, saying, "As someone who loves K-pop, I find both performing and producing incredibly fascinating." When asked about her royalties, she playfully remarked, "They're quite rewarding."

As the new year approaches, a song that naturally comes to mind is WJSN's 'As You Wish.' Despite being released five years ago, it consistently climbs the charts to number one every New Year's Day, receiving enduring love.

Choo So-jung expressed, "At the end of the year, everyone tends to feel anxious and worried. I used to dislike the year-end, but as 'As You Wish' gained popularity, my perspective on the year-end and New Year changed. It's meaningful to know that people listen to this song and wish for hope in the new year. Seeing that brings me comfort as well."

"In my 20s, I feel like I missed out on truly important things. It's a time when that's understandable, but it's vastly different from my 30s now. Back then, I didn't know myself well and often lost my way. If I could go back, I'd tell myself, 'It's okay to try everything. The hardships you worry about won't happen as much as you think.' I regret being too strict and not cherishing myself, but all those trials have made me much more mature now."
