Kang Ho-dong's Disappearing Act: The Decline of a Beloved 'National MC'

Kang Ho-dong, once cherished as a 'National MC' in South Korea, seems to be fading from the broadcasting scene. This year, he has only one new variety show, and the only remaining program he is part of, 'Knowing Bros,' struggles with ratings hovering around 1%. Unlike his former rival Yoo Jae-suk, who continues to thrive, Kang's presence at award shows has been absent for two consecutive years.

Since the conclusion of his hit series 'Great Escape' and 'New Journey to the West' in 2021, Kang has not been able to produce a successful show. Despite joining over eight new variety programs in 2022 and 2023, none have performed well. The much-anticipated revival of 'Strong Heart League' ended with a disappointing 2% viewership, concluding its 12-episode run last August.

Currently, 'Knowing Bros' is the only show featuring Kang Ho-dong. Having aired since 2015, it is one of Kang's longest-running shows. However, it has faced multiple crises due to its repetitive format and lack of fresh reactions from the panelists. The recent departure of Lee Jin-ho, following a 'illegal gambling' controversy, has further impacted the show, which struggles to maintain an average 1% viewership.

In contrast, other top hosts like Yoo Jae-suk, Lee Kyung-kyu, and Shin Dong-yup continue to achieve success. Kang has chosen programs centered around his strengths, such as sports, cooking, and food shows, but his image has become predictable and overused. The humor he once brought as the elder brother in 'New Journey to the West' or his analog persona struggling with live broadcasts has faded.

However, his YouTube channel 'Kang Ho-dong's Neighborhood,' launched two years ago under SM C&C STUDIO, offers a glimpse of his solo travel and food adventures reminiscent of '1 Night 2 Days.' With average views of around 500,000, it shows that many fans still cherish and miss Kang Ho-dong.

Given his absence from terrestrial variety shows this year, it seems unlikely that Kang will appear at the entertainment awards. His last appearance was at the 2022 Blue Dragon Series Awards, where he won the Male Entertainer Award for 'New Journey to the West Special Spring Camp.'

With six grand prizes and the distinction of being the first entertainer to win awards from all three major networks, Kang Ho-dong's diminishing presence on TV is regrettable. While he may not be the 'National MC' he once was, his influence remains significant.

There is hope for a comeback, as 'Great Escape' is planning a fifth season for next year, and PD Na Young-seok has confirmed the production of 'Three Meals a Day in Kenya,' a spin-off of 'New Journey to the West.' Kang Ho-dong's legacy is too valuable to end with past glories.
