Hwang In-yeop Embraces School Uniform Roles and Prepares for New Challenges
Hwang In-yeop, born in 1991, has once again donned a school uniform for his role in the JTBC drama 'Modular Family,' following his performances in '18 Again' (2020), 'True Beauty' (2020), and Netflix's 'The Sound of Magic' (2022). The actor shared his positive thoughts on playing student roles.
On the 28th, Hwang In-yeop met with the press at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, to discuss his role in 'Modular Family.' This marks his return to the small screen after two years since his appearance in the SBS drama 'Why Her' in 2022. Greeting the media warmly, he expressed excitement about his first face-to-face interview.
'Modular Family' is a romantic drama about three young adults who reunite after spending ten years as a family and another ten years apart. Hwang In-yeop plays Kim San-ha, a character with an appealing appearance and seemingly no shortcomings. Hwang In-yeop stated, "Many people think I might feel burdened by wearing a school uniform, but I don't. In fact, I felt more pressure during '18 Again.'" He added, "As I gain more acting experience, I see it as portraying a character. It's just the character wearing a uniform, which reduces the burden. It's my job to express the character well."
Born in 1991, he joked, "I think it's time to start taking care of myself. I'm even considering using face masks." Hwang In-yeop expressed gratitude for the positive reception, saying, "I won't say I want to stop wearing uniforms. I might wear them again," with a smile. Hwang In-yeop revealed that he lost weight for his role in 'Modular Family.' He explained, "There was a week-long gap between playing a high school student and an adult. I felt it wasn't enough to just change my hairstyle. I needed to look sharper." He added, "I wanted to convey a certain coolness, so I lost about 4-5 kg." Regarding his choice of roles, Hwang In-yeop said, "I don't make decisions alone. When opportunities arise, I discuss with my company what role would be best for me at the time." He continued, "As an actor, I feel a responsibility to show new sides of myself. 'Modular Family' was a collective decision, and I'm grateful for the positive response. It makes me more attached to the project. Personally, I think it's important to deliver a good message through my work."
Hwang In-yeop has also decided to make a special appearance in the upcoming TVING drama 'Dear X,' set to air in 2025. He shared, "I was drawn to it because it's a side of me that hasn't been shown before. Many people perceive my appearance as cold and sharp, and this character fits that image perfectly, making it feel like destiny." He added, "I've always wanted to work with director Lee Eung-bok, so I'm looking forward to it."
