Director Yeon Sang-ho revealed that the reason he cast Kim Hyun-joo in 'Jeong-i' was because of the trust he developed while working together on 'Hell'.

On the 18th, I met director Yeon Sang-ho of the Netflix movie ‘Jeong-i’ at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul. Director Yeon Sang-ho directed and wrote the screenplay for this film.

In 'Jeong-i', Kim Hyun-joo played the role of Jeong-i, a subject for brain cloning to develop the best combat AI. Jeongi is a former elite leader of the Allied Forces and a legendary mercenary who participated in numerous operations and led them to victory. He participated in the final bombing operation that could have ended the civil war that had lasted for decades, but the operation failed and he fell into a vegetative state. He becomes the subject of brain cloning to develop a combat AI that contains all of Jeongi's strategies, combat skills, strong loyalty and will. Ryu Kyung-soo played Sang-hoon, the head of a research center who must succeed in developing combat AI.

This work is also the posthumous work of the late Kang Soo-yeon. Kang Soo-yeon takes on the role of Yoon Seo-hyeon, a team leader at a research lab that develops brain cloning and AI technology. Seohyun is also the daughter of the human Jeongi.

Director Yeon Sang-ho already worked with Kim Hyun-joo in his previous film ‘Hell’. Regarding the reason for casting Kim Hyun-joo as the protagonist of a science fiction film, director Yeon Sang-ho said, "The biggest thing is that we worked together on a previous work. Kim Hyun-joo also had an action scene in 'Hell' and trained for a long time for the action scene. Her action acting had been completed to some extent. “There were action scenes in ‘Hell,’ but it was unfortunate that they couldn’t be shown much,” he said. He continued, "Kim Hyun-joo had good and smooth chemistry with the staff and fellow actors on set. Hasn't the emotional part already been verified through other works?" He also said, "Because there were many new parts in terms of work and pre-production, it was not a place where I could afford to adapt to completely new actors. If possible, I tried to work with actors I could trust and work with." At the same time, "When I did a hair and costume test for the role of Jeong, I was confident after seeing Kim Hyun-joo's appearance. I was able to draw feelings that were not well drawn when writing the script. After seeing a few tests of actress Kim Hyun-joo, she is both a mother and a warrior. “I thought I found an actor who could express those two things,” he added.

'Jeong-i' is a science fiction film that tells the story of people who try to develop the best combat AI by cloning the brain of the legendary mercenary 'Jeong-i' in order to end the war that broke out in the shelter where they migrated away from the Earth devastated by climate change. It will be released on the 20th.
