NewJeans Nominated for Japan Record Awards Grand Prize for Second Consecutive Year
NewJeans has been nominated for the Grand Prize at the Japan Record Awards for the second year in a row.
According to their agency ADOR, NewJeans (members Minji, Hani, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein) received the Excellence Award for their song 'Supernatural' at the 66th Japan Record Awards.
The 'Excellence Award' is given to songs that have gained significant popularity and are recognized for their artistry, originality, and planning. This year, NewJeans' song is the only work by an international artist to receive this honor.
The ten songs that receive the 'Excellence Award' are also contenders for the Grand Prize, which will be announced during the live broadcast of the awards ceremony on December 30.
The Japan Record Awards, organized by the Japan Composer's Association, is one of the most prestigious and long-standing music award ceremonies in Japan, having started in 1959. Last year, NewJeans won both the 'Excellence Award' for 'Ditto' and a 'Special Award' even before their official debut in Japan.
Riding on their immense popularity, NewJeans is set to appear on major Japanese year-end broadcasts and festivals. They will perform on Nihon TV's 'Best Artist 2024' on November 30 and Fuji TV's '2024 FNS Music Festival' on December 4. On December 31, they will make history as the first K-pop girl group to perform at Japan's largest indoor year-end festival, 'Countdown Japan 24/25'.
NewJeans has had a remarkable year in Japan. Their debut single 'Supernatural', released in June, topped the Oricon chart on its release day and received a Gold Disc certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan for selling over 100,000 copies. The album has sold over 1.26 million copies to date (as of October, according to Circle Chart). The title track 'Supernatural' quickly climbed to the top of major music charts in Japan and achieved high rankings on both domestic and international charts, showcasing NewJeans' global appeal.
Additionally, NewJeans set a milestone by becoming the fastest international artist to perform at Tokyo Dome, achieving this feat in just 1 year and 11 months. Their fan meeting 'Bunnies Camp 2024 Tokyo Dome' on June 26-27 sold out, attracting over 91,200 fans. They have also made a strong impression by appearing on various Japanese terrestrial music programs.
