Director Jang Dong-yoon Discusses Challenges and Resolutions with Cast on Set of 'Nuruuk'
Director Jang Dong-yoon opens up about the challenges and resolutions he faced with the cast during the filming of 'Nuruuk'.

On the 13th, Jang Dong-yoon, the director of the film 'Nuruuk', was interviewed at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul. 'Nuruuk' tells the story of a high school girl named Daseul, who loves makgeolli and is the daughter of a famous local brewery owner. One day, she notices a change in the taste of makgeolli and sets out to find the missing yeast, leading to an intriguing adventure.

Jang Dong-yoon cast his close acquaintance, actor Park Myung-hoon, in the role of the father. He shared, "I call him 'Myung-hoon hyung' even in private, that's how close we are. I was already familiar with his acting style, so I thought there would be no need to intervene as long as he memorized his lines well, and he did just that. There was no pressure because he is a senior."

Jang candidly discussed the conflicts between 'understanding' and 'expression' with the actors. He stated, "There are time and physical constraints on set. When I was a rookie, I once asked a director, 'Why do I have to do it this way?' and was told, 'You only act when you're convinced, don't you?' implying I was being stubborn."

He continued, "However, there are times when deep philosophical contemplation isn't necessary. With less experienced junior actors, I would think, 'There they go with their philosophical musings again,' and just let it go," he laughed. He added, "I was like that when I was new too. I understand that actors want to fully comprehend and act out everything, but focusing on immediate expression within the world the director has created seems much more effective."

Jang asked the actors on set to "just express without trying to understand right now." He admitted, "I clashed with the actors, big and small, at least once." However, he smiled and said, "Initially skeptical actors later said, 'I should have listened to the director.'"

'Nuruuk' is set to release on the 15th.
