Blockbuster 'The King and the Man' to Revise Controversial Tiger CGI After Box Office Success
On October 10, the YouTube channel 'Im Soo-yeon's Bae San Im Soo' released a video titled 'The Journey of 'The King and the Man' to 10 Million Viewers Amidst COVID-19.' In the video, journalist Im Soo-yeon analyzed the reasons behind the film's success and shared related news.
Im Soo-yeon discussed the behind-the-scenes of the film's release, stating, "The release date was moved up, leaving insufficient time for post-production." She explained, "The blind screening received positive feedback, and it was deemed competitive for the Lunar New Year holiday, leading to an earlier release decision."
A particularly noteworthy moment was when she mentioned, "The CGI team is still working on revising the tiger scenes." She added, "The CGI work continues in consideration of the film's ancillary rights and release on other platforms."
Previously, 'The King and the Man' was praised for its actors' performances, perfectly reenacting the final moments of King Danjong. However, some criticized the low quality of the tiger CGI in certain scenes.
Director Jang Hang-jun, who helmed the project, stated before the release, "Rendering the tiger's fur requires an enormous amount of time, and there wasn't enough time to make revisions." Co-producer Jang Won-seok also noted, "The positive response from the blind screening led to the distributor's decision to move up the release, which left insufficient time for post-production."
Set in 1457 at Cheongnyeongpo, 'The King and the Man' is a historical drama depicting the story of village chief Eom Heung-do and the young former king Danjong. The film features Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Jeon Mi-do, and Yoo Ji-tae, garnering significant attention. Released on September 4, 'The King and the Man' surpassed 10 million viewers in just 31 days, with a cumulative audience of 11.7 million by October 9.
