Netflix Unveils 'Officer Black Belt': A Deep Dive into the World of Martial Arts Officers
Netflix has released an intriguing introduction video for the film 'Officer Black Belt,' delving into the fascinating story behind the project.
'Officer Black Belt' is an action film that follows Lee Jeong-do (played by Kim Woo-bin), a martial arts expert with black belts in Taekwondo, Kendo, and Judo, who starts working as a martial arts officer under the suggestion of probation officer Kim Sun-min (played by Kim Sung-kyun). Together, they monitor individuals wearing electronic anklets 24/7 to prevent crimes. The film explores the world of martial arts officers and probation officers, everyday heroes rarely depicted in media. Director Kim Joo-hwan, who has long been familiar with the profession of martial arts officers, revealed that the story began with the question, 'Can someone who values their own happiness risk their life for the happiness of others? Can an ordinary person possess such grand love?' He felt that martial arts officers were the perfect answer to his question, leading to the creation of a story about characters never seen before.
Kim Woo-bin and Kim Sung-kyun visited the Suwon Probation Office before filming to hear firsthand accounts from real martial arts officers and probation officers, building a solid understanding of their characters. Kim Woo-bin shared, 'Meeting actual martial arts officers made me realize the incredible work they do.' He trained in Taekwondo, Judo, and Kendo to authentically portray Lee Jeong-do, a character with black belts in all three martial arts. He also noted, 'The transformation of Lee Jeong-do from a fun-seeking young man to a martial arts officer was deeply impressive.'
Kim Sung-kyun, inspired by his visit to the probation office, emphasized the human aspect of the job, stating, 'It's about managing people in ways machines can't.'
Director Kim Joo-hwan described 'Officer Black Belt' as 'the story of an ordinary young man realizing he can make a difference in the world and gradually becoming a hero.' He aimed to combine genre-specific excitement with a sincere message. The film's detailed and thrilling real-action sequences are designed to provide a spectacular viewing experience. Highlighting the unseen efforts of martial arts officers and probation officers, 'Officer Black Belt' promises to deliver both action-packed entertainment and a profound story about everyday heroes. The introduction video for 'Officer Black Belt' features Kim Woo-bin's voice, explaining the role of martial arts officers and their responsibilities. He expressed gratitude for the hard work of martial arts officers and probation officers, stating, 'Thanks to their efforts, we can enjoy a safe daily life.' The video also highlights the chemistry between Kim Woo-bin and Kim Sung-kyun, raising expectations for their teamwork in the film.
'Officer Black Belt' will be available on Netflix starting September 13.
