Chef Sungjae Ahn's Fine Dining Restaurant Faces Wine Vintage Controversy
On the 21st, an online community post titled 'Chef Sungjae Ahn's Restaurant Switched Wine Vintages' surfaced.
The author, identified as A, claimed that the vintage of the wine served during their meal differed from what was ordered. According to A, the sommelier described the wine as a '2005' vintage, but the pairing list indicated it was a '2000' vintage.
A explained that they noticed the vintage discrepancy while verifying the unexpected taste and aroma of the wine during the meal.
The issue is compounded by the fact that the price difference between the two vintages is approximately $100. A stated, "When I requested verification, the sommelier later claimed there was a separate 2000 vintage bottle." When asked for a photo, the presence of a different vintage bottle raised suspicions that the error was known from the start.
A also expressed disappointment, saying, "It's questionable for such a mistake to occur at a Michelin two-star restaurant, but the response of offering a taste without an apology was more disappointing."
As the post gained traction, online debates erupted. Criticisms emphasized the importance of service trust in high-end dining, while others suggested waiting for an official statement due to the one-sided nature of the claim.
The restaurant has yet to release an official statement regarding the controversy.
Meanwhile, Korean-American chef Sungjae Ahn gained recognition through Netflix's 'Black and White Chef' in 2024. He specializes in fine dining and has a branch of the restaurant involved in the controversy located in Hong Kong.
