The Broadway musical 'Girlfriend', which captures the pivotal moments of youth on the brink of adulthood, is making its Korean debut. Known for its casting of singers rather than traditional musical actors, 'Girlfriend' is set to captivate audiences with its heartfelt story.

On the afternoon of the 30th, a press call for 'Girlfriend' was held at Baekam Art Hall in Gangnam. The event was attended by associate director Noh Woo-jin, music director J. ACO (Seo Dae-yeon), and actors Kim Jae-han, Yeon-ho, Ok Jin-wook, Tae-ho, Hong Eun-ki, Na Sang-do, Niel, Lee Ho-won, Kim Hyun-joong, and Lee Do-kyung.

Set in the 1990s, 'Girlfriend' tells the story of two young men, Will and Mike, who connect through music as they approach graduation. The narrative explores their journey as they navigate unfamiliar emotions and gradually close the gap between them, despite their individual insecurities and deficiencies.

The production is based on the album of the same name by renowned American singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet. Playwright and composer Todd Almond adapted the story for the stage. As a Broadway production, the main challenge for the director is to ensure that the original's emotional depth and music resonate with Korean audiences. The music director explained, "We focused on conveying delicate emotions. The cast and creative team put a lot of thought into the arrangements, adapting the rock-based music to suit 2026, enhancing audience understanding."

The casting predominantly features idols and trot singers rather than seasoned musical actors. Director Noh admitted, "I was concerned when I received the casting list from the production company," but added, "Musicals are about individual expression, and the actors exceeded expectations."

Niel and Lee Ho-won echoed these sentiments, noting, "Watching the actors during rehearsals, their natural performances emerged." Lee Ho-won urged audiences to watch without prejudice, stating, "With experience, interpretation becomes quicker."

The duo expressed excitement about working with less experienced actors, saying, "It's refreshing and exciting. We've learned and been inspired through this project. Each performance feels new because we don't stick to a set routine."

Director Noh added, "On stage, actors must synchronize even the smallest details. We've worked to showcase each actor's unique personality, and audiences will enjoy the different charms each pair brings."

Regarding the show's appeal, the actors highlighted, "Everyone sometimes wants to share their pain, and seeing Will find someone to connect with is relatable and comforting." They also praised the music, saying, "The handsome Wills and Mikes will be a visual treat, and the music will delight the ears, ensuring the show leaves a lasting impression."

'Girlfriend' will be performed at Baekam Art Hall from May 31 to June 7.
