Kim Tae-ri's First Variety Show Faces Challenges with Viewer Ratings

Reporter Kim Se-ah from TenAsia delves into the entertainment industry's latest issues with depth and insight.
Starting with a 1.5% rating on its first episode, tvN's 'After School Teacher Tae-ri' has recently dropped to a 0.7% nationwide household rating according to Nielsen Korea. This marks nearly a 50% decrease. The show is a new reality variety program that features a unique after-school theater class set in a small village elementary school.
Viewers anticipated a light-hearted and healing variety show, but the actual broadcast was more serious and focused on perfection. Kim Tae-ri emphasized the importance of completeness in her approach to the class, prioritizing the lesson itself over the relaxed atmosphere typical of variety shows.
The chemistry among the cast was not entirely smooth either. Kim Tae-ri felt that Choi Hyun-wook did not show enough passion in preparing for the class, while Choi believed he was doing his best, leading to visible tension and even tears from Choi. Although they attempted to resolve their differences through conversation, the atmosphere felt more tense than entertaining.
This mismatch between the show's direction and viewer expectations is believed to have contributed to the drop in ratings. The initial interest did not sustain as the program's tone differed from what audiences anticipated. While the attempt to maintain authenticity and quality was evident, it felt burdensome for a variety show.
Kim Tae-ri's attempt to blend her acting expertise with variety show elements was a bold experiment, but it seems she struggled to connect with the audience. The balancing act between acting and entertainment left much to be desired.
