The film 'Method Acting' confuses audiences right from the start. Although it is packaged as a comedy, it lacks a strong intent to make viewers laugh. In fact, it could be considered a sad film. The opening day's audience count of around 10,000 might be seen as an honest reaction. However, the film's message and Lee Dong-hwi's performance cannot be judged solely by its box office numbers.

Is the Film Truly a Comedy? The Confusion of Mixed Genres

'Method Acting' is known as a comedy, but it portrays 'a comedian who doesn't want to be funny,' as Lee Dong-hwi immerses himself in his role to gain recognition for his sincere acting. The film blurs the line between acting and reality by having Lee play a character with his own name, creating a fake documentary style that draws audiences in.

The intriguing aspect is the gap between the character and the real Lee Dong-hwi. In the film, Lee's character almost despises comedic acting, yet in real interviews, he expresses gratitude for any opportunity, showing a stark contrast. Ironically, the character in the film also comes to accept the meaning of 'given opportunities' through a series of events, cleverly intertwining the actor's personal attitude with the character's narrative.

However, the issue lies in the direction. The beginning adopts comedic conventions, but the humor falls flat. Except for a few scenes, it fails to elicit laughter. Audiences expecting a comedy might feel betrayed. This film seems more like a comedy that never intended to be funny.

How is Lee Dong-hwi's Acting? A Departure from 'Reply 1988'

Despite its shortcomings, the film is hard to dismiss due to Lee Dong-hwi's performance. Unlike his friendly and cheerful image in 'Reply 1988' and 'Extreme Job,' he delivers a completely different type of acting. His portrayal of anger and emotional outpouring convinces audiences why the film is titled 'Method Acting.'

The film's characters, including a mother who pretends not to be in pain and Lee's character who says he's fine when he's not, all engage in 'method acting,' serving as a metaphor for everyone navigating reality.

Between Quality and Sincerity, How Should It Be Evaluated?

The shortcomings of 'Method Acting' are evident. It was marketed as a comedy through social media and posters, but the humor density is significantly low, and the tone between the beginning and end doesn't transition smoothly. While the fake documentary style was intriguing, it lacked the strength to carry the narrative cohesively. There are clear points where it misses the mark in both genre direction and quality.

As a comedy, it is nearly a failure. The humor is sparse, and there are many disappointing aspects. Yet, it's hard to overlook the film because of the sincerity and attitude of actor Lee Dong-hwi that it conveys.

If one were to rate the film itself, it might not even deserve one star. However, Lee Dong-hwi's acting and the sincerity embedded in the film deserve five stars. While the film leaves much to be desired, the actor's attitude is not something to criticize lightly. It's a work where sincerity outweighs quality, making it all the more poignant and regrettable.
