On the 18th, President Lee announced via his official account that he has instructed comprehensive safety measures for the BTS concert at Gwanghwamun Square on the 21st. He stated, "We are making all necessary preparations with relevant departments, local governments, police, and fire services to ensure the event proceeds safely," adding, "We will meticulously check all procedures, including traffic and crowd management and emergency response." He also urged citizens to maintain order, saying, "Please cooperate with on-site safety personnel and report any scalping activities."
BTS is set to release their 5th studio album 'ARIRANG' on the 20th and will hold a comeback live performance at Gwanghwamun Square at 8 PM on the 21st. This marks the first time a solo artist will perform at this location. The concert will be broadcast live worldwide via Netflix.
How will nearby facilities be affected?
With an estimated 260,000 people expected to gather on the day of the concert, nearby major facilities have altered their operation plans. The Sejong Center for the Performing Arts has canceled scheduled musicals and ballet performances, while the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History will be closed on that date. The Cultural Heritage Administration's Royal Palaces and Tombs Division also announced that Gyeongbokgung Palace will be closed on the 21st.
What about traffic control and facilities?
The Seoul Metropolitan Government will deploy around 2,000 portable toilets on-site and implement public transportation controls. Gwanghwamun Station, City Hall Station, and Gyeongbokgung Station will have non-stop passage and entrance closures, which may extend to Euljiro 1-ga Station depending on congestion. Nearby businesses like Kyobo Bookstore Gwanghwamun and Starbucks will operate on shortened hours, and bus detours and public bike rentals will be suspended.
Public opinion on the event is divided. While some anticipate economic and cultural benefits from the influx of tourists, others criticize the large-scale inconvenience caused by a private company's concert. A Seoul city official stated, "We will do our utmost to manage the site so that both the artist and citizens can enjoy the concert safely."
